Benefit planned Saturday for Erick Schultz

ERICK SCHULTZ

IRON MOUNTAIN — A fundraiser is planned on Saturday in efforts to help Erick Schultz fight relapsed leukemia.

The event, which is hosted by the Iron Bandogs LE/MC and Bimbo’s, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bimbo’s Wine Press in Iron Mountain.

Schultz was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic B-cell leukemia in February of 2018, at age 17. He has been in remission just short of two years after treatment, but just days before Christmas last year he relapsed.

After a month at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Schultz has been treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts. On March 31, he underwent a bone marrow transplant with his older brother Matthew as his donor.

Matthew was required to make several trips to Boston for testing prior to being selected to be his bone marrow donor.

Matthew Schultz, left, donated bone marrow to his brother Erick on March 31 at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts.

Schultz will remain inpatient at Boston Children’s for a number of weeks and will need to continue to stay in Boston with his parents for follow-up care for at least six months following his discharge.

Schultz will be immune compromised and unable to work for an extended period to time.

Family members and friends hope the fundraiser will help ease the financial burden that comes with treating cancer and traveling a great distance from home.

Tickets for the gun raffle, which includes a Dickinson Arms Ranger Bullpup 12-gauge and Ruger Precision bolt 17 HMR, as well as steel targets, are currently on sale at Westman Precision in Iron Mountain. They will also be sold at the benefit.

In addition, they will be raffling off many baskets and other donated items from local businesses and organizations. Those participating in the raffle do not need to be present to win.

Organizers will also be selling Team Erick items and heating bags at the event.

Anyone wishing to donate raffle items for the benefit can contact Judy Plaswirth at 906-282-9288.

Starting at $4.00/week.
