Kingsford schedules rubbish collection

KINGSFORD — A spring rubbish collection will begin April 25 in Kingsford, starting in Ford Addition and proceeding to the Heights, Garden Village, Breitung and outlying areas.

One pass will be done through the city. The city will charge a minimum of $75 for making special collections.

Loose lawn materials must be placed on the street behind the curb or street edge. Other items should be placed where garbage usually is collected. Limbs and brush should be cut to 6- to 8-feet lengths, and brush should be from regular yard cleaning only.

Grass leaves and garden waste must be piled separately or in bags.

All large metal items and large furniture items — such as chairs, tables, sofas, beds, etc. — must be separated from other rubbish items.

Concrete must be broken into pieces approximately 1 foot square and piled separately and not exceed one cubic yard.

Building materials can be collected with the weekly garbage.

The city will not collect appliances with refrigerant, waste from total demolitions or construction or reconstruction, tires, waste oil, gasoline, or hazardous or toxic waste.

The compost dropoff site will be open to Kingsford residents only from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays beginning next week.

In other business at its April 4 meeting, the council:

— Agreed to go in with Breitung Township to have aerial photography done in relation to the city’s Geographic Information System. The cost would be $65.39 per square mile. It has been at least five years since aerial photos of the city have been taken, City Manager Mike Stelmaszek said. The rate without going in with Breitung Township would be about $108 per square mile.

— After public hearings, approved the introduction of Ordinance 292 for blight and 293 for noise. They will be considered for approval at the April 18 meeting.

— Gave approval for Jeff DeMuri, superintendent of public works, and Jim Stearns, water crew leader, to attend the U.P. Spring Water Conference on April 19 at the Island Resort Casino.

— Learned the city has received seven applications for two open positions in the public works department.

— Approved a contract not to exceed $81,500 for Coleman Engineering of Iron Mountain for engineering related to a road project at the east end of the city.

Starting at $4.00/week.
