A list of plans in the region to mark Memorial Day 2022

IRON MOUNTAIN — Area communities will come together to remember and honor those who died in service of their country this Memorial Day.

Local ceremonies include:

IRON MOUNTAIN

The annual Veterans Tribute Ride will make a stop at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain at about 11 a.m. today, where there will be a short ceremony.

The ride will conclude at approximately 2:45 to 3 p.m. at the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 in Iron Mountain.

Cost is $20 per person, which includes snacks, dinner and entertainment at the Legion Post 50. Active-duty military personnel in uniform ride free.

Post 50 will host the after-party event which will include snacks, dinner and entertainment. They will also have many raffle and door prizes donated by area businesses and individuals. Drawings will start between 4:30 and 5 p.m.

All funds raised go to supporting local veteran projects and organizations.

The Dickinson County Office of Veterans Affairs invites the community to the annual Memorial Day ceremony. Due to concerns about possible repairs to the courthouse clock tower, this year’s ceremony was moved away from the courthouse lawn.

The parade route will also change, starting as usual on East Ludington Street at 8:45 a.m. but heading east to Iron Mountain Street and then south to the downtown stage. Participants are asked to line up at 8:15 a.m.

Niagara Area Historical Society volunteers recently revived a 20-year-old wooden art piece made by the late Bob Sparks. The wooden silhouette is of the iconic photograph of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima in World War II. The program will begin immediately after the parade. During the program, Iron Mountain Street will be closed from Hughitt to East A Streets.

Masters of ceremony will be Dave Stohl and Denise Formolo. The invocation will be given by Dennis Lynch.

Local veteran’s organizations will conduct the Posting of the Colors.

Local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Music, including “The Star-Spangled Banner,” will be performed by the Iron Mountain High School and Kingsford High School bands. The KHS choir will also perform.

The main speaker will be John Jamison, Office of Public Affairs and Veterans Engagement at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

The conclusion of the program will include a gun salute and taps played by Juliana Tapio, a member of the IMHS band.

If it rains, the program will be moved to the Braumart Theatre, 106 E. B St. in Iron Mountain.

Office of Veterans Affairs asks the community to join the rest of the nation at 3 p.m. Memorial Day in a one-minute moment of silence to pay tribute to soldiers who gave their lives.

The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 of Iron Mountain will be conducting a Memorial Day service starting at 11 a.m. Monday at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Speaker for the event will be Terry Testolin. Members will also lay wreaths to honor deceased veterans.

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP

Kingsford Carpenter-Clash American Legion Post 363 services will begin at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Breitung Township Cemetery in Quinnesec.

Master of ceremonies will be Adjutant Gary Chapman.

The Kingsford High School band, under the direction of Ben Sherk, will play “The Star-Spangled Banner” while the flags are raised to full mast, and then lowered back to half- mast in memory of the fallen comrades.

Scout Pack 510 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the invocation prayer by the legion chaplain.

Riley Hansen will recite a poem and Post 363 Commander Lewis Adams will say a thank you.

The Post 363 sergeant-at-arms will lead the POW and MIA salute.

Main speaker for the program will be Dylan Bolander, Air Force, Gulf War era veteran and student speaker will be Linnea Boehmfeldt, an eighth-grade student at Kingsford Middle School.

Musical selections will be provided by the Kingsford High School band and the KHS Concert Chorale.

They will recognize deceased Post 363 member Rodger Weinert.

The post will salute fallen soldiers as well by firing three rounds, plus one round for the unknown soldier.

KHS band students Clara Anderson and Linnea Boehmfeldt will play taps.

Flowers will be presented by the sergeant-at-arms to remember veterans and wars fought.

KHS band will have the closing march and the Legion chaplain will offer closing prayer.

After the main program at the Breitung Township Cemetery, post members will go to Memorial Gardens and conduct a short program for veterans buried there.

At 6 p.m., flags will be raised back to full mast.

NORWAY

A Memorial Day program will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the Norway Township Cemetery.

Terry Backlund will be master of ceremonies and Veterans of Foreign Wars Chaplain George Olson will give the invocation.

The Norway City Band and Norway High and Middle School bands will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Marie Devine will place a wreath on the cannon as a tribute to the unknown soldier and to all war dead. Olson also will read a prayer for departed comrades.

Norway High School students will read the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.

Senator Ed McBroom will give the Memorial Day address.

Wally Zychowski, American Legion chaplain, will provide a prayer.

The American Legion and VFW squads will fire three volleys for the war dead and a single round for the unknown soldier.

Taps by the Norway city and high school band will conclude program.

HERMANSVILLE-FAITHORN

Memorial Day ceremonies, conducted by the Floriano-Stecker-Kelly American Legion Post 340, begin early Monday with raising the flag to half-staff at the Riverside and Meyer Township cemeteries.

Members of the Legion, Auxiliary, Vietnam Veterans of America, Amvets and Scouts will meet at 8 a.m. at the post’s club rooms.

Services will be 9 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Faithorn and 9:30 a.m. at the Menominee River in Faithorn. The Norway-Vulcan school band will provide musical selections at the Faithorn cemetery.

Coffee and brunch will be served at the Faithorn Township Hall after the service.

Members will then go to the Hermansville Lake at 10:30 a.m. and the Veteran’s Memorial Market at 10:45 a.m. for a short program.

A ceremony will follow at 11:15 a.m. in the Meyer Township Cemetery.

The Post will conduct a memorial prayer followed by a roll call of deceased veterans. They will also lay a wreath and salute to recognizing all the dead.

Lunch will be served at the Legion Club rooms by the Ladies Auxiliary, Post 340 following the service at Meyer Township Cemetery.

FELCH-FOSTER CITY

The Felch-Breen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4803 will conduct Memorial Day services at only two locations this year due to construction of the Norway Lake Road. The program will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Felch Cemetery and at 11 a.m. at the Foster City Cemetery.

The veterans will assemble at the Felch Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

Services at the Ralph Cemetery as well as the open house at the clubhouse have been canceled due to the road closure.

CHANNING

Memorial Day services, conducted by the American Legion Post 168, will begin at 9 a.m. at the Channing Cemetery. American Legion Commander Greg Harper will be the speaker for the event to honor fallen comrades in Sagola Township. The North Dickinson County School band will also perform.

CRYSTAL FALLS

Memorial Day ceremonies for Crystal Falls will start with the parade at 9 a.m. at Washington Avenue and Logan Street and then marching to the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Christopher Sholander will serve as master of ceremonies. After the invocation by Steve Rhoades, the Forest Park High School band will provide music.

The address will be given by Mike Mjork, a former FPHS graduate and U.S. Air Force veteran.

After the speech, the VFW Auxiliary will lead the wreath ceremony, followed by a volley by the color guard. Taps will be played by the Forest Park High School band.

Closing prayer will be given by Rhoades.

If bad weather threatens, the parade will be canceled and the service moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Eddie Chambers Memorial Gym at Forest Park High School.

IRON RIVER

Memorial Day events begin with a volley fired by American Legion Post 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Iron River Cemetery.

The program will continue at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial on Genesee Street, led by the West Side Veterans Council. The Legion Post 17 Auxiliary president will lay the wreath at the memorial.

A parade up Genesee Street will take place just after the memorial ceremonies.

The program at Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River will be 11 a.m., with retired Navy veteran Darin Long,

as the guest speaker.

Military rites will be presented by the West Side Veterans.

The program will be repeated at noon at the cemetery in Alvin, Wis.

STAMBAUGH

Members of the Reino American Legion Post 21 will place flags on the graves of veterans at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Stambaugh Cemetery.

The Memorial Day program will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the cemetery. Senior Master Sgt. Marie Brunswick, retired USAF, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The flag will be raised by members of the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department.

Post 21 Auxiliary members Linda Nasser and Linda Johnson will place a wreath on a cross in honor of all deceased veterans. West Iron County student Savannah Cole will give recitations.

This year’s guest speaker is Wendy Retzloff, retired U.S. Army and Zone 5 Commander for the American Legion.

The program will conclude with the firing of a volley by members of the Reino Post 21 firing squad and the playing of taps.

In case of poor weather, the program will be moved to the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Hall.

The American Legion Reino Post 21 also will conduct a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. at the Iron River Care Center. All are welcome to attend.

BATES TOWNSHIP

Memorial Day services will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at the Bates Township Cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3134 of Iron River will provide the flag raising and color guard.

Music will be provided by Jessica Thibodeau. The invocation and benediction will be by the Rev. Corey Shankleton, pastor of Northgate Church in Bates Township.

Main speaker will be William Delauter, U.S. Army 82nd Airborne, 1st Sergeant.

Refreshments will be served just after the ceremony at the Bates Township Hall, 3070 E. U.S. 2.

The ceremony also will be moved to the hall if poor weather threatens.

BEECHWOOD

Ceremonies at Rosehill Cemetery in Beechwood will begin at 8 a.m. Monday. The Amvets Post 436 will present the colors.

Pat Turner will be master of ceremonies. Post Chaplain Dale Melstrom will give the invocation with a solo of the national anthem by Annalia Lopez. Melina Lopez will give a patriotic reading following a musical presentation by Krista Gussert and Gary Friestrom.

The wreath will be placed by Harlie and Gracyn Melstrom, who will also lead the pledge.

The Memorial Day address will be given by Senior Master Sgt. Jonathon Bofinger, retired USAF.

Roll call will be given by Post Commander Frank Jirik and with the benediction by Melstrom.

The Post 436 color guard will fire the volley and taps by Mike Peterson will conclude the proceedings.

Immediately after the program, participants are invited to a social at Beechwood Hall.

NIAGARA, Wis.

Cretton-Tutas American Legion Post 136 of Niagara, Wis., will conduct its Memorial Day service at 1:30 p.m. at the Niagara Cemetery. Niagara High School senior Evan Bruemmer will be the speaker. All are invited to attend a reception following the service.

HOMESTEAD-AURORA, Wis.

Memorial Day services will start at 11 a.m. Monday at the Aurora-Homestead Cemetery on County Road B, about 3 miles west of Aurora, Wis.

The ceremony will be held rain or shine. Attendees are reminded to bring a chair.

FLORENCE-COMMONWEALTH, Wis.

The Florence American Legion Post 211 will present its annual Memorial Day ceremonies. They will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery at 10 a.m., with the program at 10:30 a.m. at the Commonwealth Cemetery.

The Florence High School Band will also perform for the ceremonies. Post Commander Mario Zanoni will be the speaker.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at the Florence Community Center, 749 Central Ave. in Florence.

TIPLER-LONG LAKE, Wis.

Memorial Day services at the Florence Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3635 will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Martin Cemetery in Tipler, Wis., with a 10:40 a.m. service to follow at Long Lake Cemetery. VFW commander Aaron Volling will be the speaker for the programs.

PEMBINE-DUNBAR, Wis.

The Pembine American Legion Post 461 invites the public to the annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Pembine Cemetery.

When the ceremony concludes, the group will travel to the Dunbar Cemetery for services at 11:30 a.m.

AMBERG, Wis.

The Mullany-McTrusty Legion Post 428 and Auxiliary will conduct their annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Amberg Cemetery in Amberg, Wis.

Speaker for the event will be Judge Jim Morrison of Marinette.

The Wausaukee High School band will play taps and other selections. The Legion will provide a gun salute and Auxiliary members will lay a wreath.

St. Agnes Catholic Church will host a luncheon after the ceremony. Cost is $10.

GOODMAN-ARMSTRONG CREEK-FENCE, Wis.

The Martell-Musia American Legion Unit 325 of Goodman will conduct memorial services at three locations: Programs will be 9 a.m. at the Hillside Cemetery in Fence; at 10 a.m. at Pine Hill Cemetery in Armstrong Creek; and at 11 a.m. at Glenwood Cemetery in Goodman, Wis.

A lunch will follow at the Goodman Town Hall.

CRIVITZ, Wis.

The Netzel-Zenz American Legion Post 413 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 2063 will conduct three ceremonies on Memorial Day. The first will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Pine Hills Cemetery in Middle Inlet, followed by a ceremony at 10:30 at the Crivitz Cemetery and at approximately 11 a.m. at the NewCare Assisted Living Facility in Crivitz, Wis.
