Field narrowed for state legislative races

The field is set for legislative races in the Upper Peninsula after Tuesday’s primary election, with incumbent state Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, facing a Nov. 8 general election challenge by Democrat John Braamse of Marquette.

McBroom turned back two Republican opponents Tuesday, receiving more than 77% of the vote. Braamse, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary, is a U.S. Army veteran and a special education paraprofessional at Marquette Area Public Schools.

In the 109th House District, which includes part of Dickinson County along with Baraga, Marquette and Alger counties, the Nov. 8 race will be between Republican Melody Wagner of Forsyth Township and Democrat Jenn Hill of Marquette.

In the Republican primary, Wagner received 53% of the vote to defeat Ron Gray of Sands Township. Hill received 55% of the vote in the Democratic primary to turn back Joe Boogren of Gwinn.

In Dickinson County, Wagner prevailed in the Republican primary over Gray, 448 to 419. Hill, meanwhile, edged Boogren in the Democratic primary, 231 to 213. Dickinson County municipalities in the 109th District are the city of Norway and Breen, Felch, Norway, Waucedah and West Branch townships. Incumbent state Rep. Sara Cambensy, D-Marquette, is leaving office due to term limits.

In the 110th House District, incumbent state Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock, will be challenged in November by Democrat Casey VerBerkmoes of Hubbell. Both candidates were unopposed Tuesday in their respective primaries.

The 110th District includes the Dickinson County cities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford, along with Breitung and Sagola townships. The district also covers Iron, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

Representing Republicans on the ballot in 108th House District will be David Prestin of Cedar River, who secured 43% of the vote. Falling in behind Prestin at the polls were Mark Simon, 29%; Casey Hoffman, 19%; and Kurt Perron, 9%.

As a result of redistricting, the 108th District will cover Menominee, Delta, Schoolcraft and Chippewa counties. The incumbent in the district, state Rep. Beau LaFave, R-Iron Mountain, is term-limited. Only one 108th District candidate filed to represent the Democrats in November, Chris Lopez of Escanaba.
