More road weight limits to be lifted in Dickinson

IRON MOUNTAIN — More seasonal road restrictions will be lifted Monday morning in Dickinson County, officials announced Friday.

The Dickinson County Road Commission will end restrictions on county roads south of M-69 beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, the commission stated in a news release.

But the restrictions will continue at least another week for roughly the northern half of Dickinson County, officials said.

The county’s weighmaster has been evaluating the roads weekly and “there’s still a lot of saturation up there,” said Jim Harris, managing director of the Dickinson County Road Commission.

It’s already delayed one project this season on Nestor Road in Felch Township, where they want to install a culvert and do gravel improvements on a back section of the road, Harris said.

The northern half needs warmer weather and dry conditions before the restrictions can be eased across the county, Harris said.

The county last Monday morning ended weight restrictions on roads south of U.S. 2.

The Michigan Department of Transportation that same day lifted restrictions on all state trunkline highways, which are routes that carry M, I or a U.S. designation. Some limits had remained in the Upper Peninsula after MDOT began relaxing restrictions elsewhere April 1.

The seasonal restrictions are aimed at reducing potential pavement damage during the spring thaw.

Weight limits on local roads usually remain in place longer as well, Harris said, because county roads are not built to the same standard as the more well-traveled state highways.

The lifting of restrictions also tends to come in stages in Dickinson County in most years, gradually being shifted north to the Marquette County line as conditions allow.
