Bay College speaker to discuss ‘Ungrieving’

Jennifer Stolpa Flatt

ESCANABA — Jennifer Stolpa Flatt will talk about her book, “Ungrieving: A Memoir of Emotional Abuse, Loss, and Relief” (Mission Point Press, 2024), at 2 p.m. Eastern time Thursday.

This presentation will take place at two locations: the Besse Theater on the Escanaba Bay College Campus, and livestreamed to Room 107 on the Iron Mountain Campus.

This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. Anyone interested in viewing this presentation remotely may receive a link to the event by sending an email to diversity@baycollege.edu.

Flatt’s memoir explores her complex relationship with her dad, whose death 12 years ago left her experiencing a strange kind of grief. “The mental health issues he struggled with most of his life led to emotional and verbal abuse in our family, some strong family dysfunction,” Flatt shared. “When he died, I didn’t miss him, which made me feel guilty. And then sometimes I did miss him, which left me confused.”

Flatt believes the memoir’s insights will resonate with those who have experienced family divisions or who support those who do, and those who struggle to let go of the relationships they wanted but never had.

“I wanted to provide people with the book I needed but couldn’t find,” Flatt said.

Flatt is currently the vice president of Student Affairs for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. Previously, she was a professor of English and Spanish at UW-Marinette. She lives in Marinette with her husband, Jason, and her two teenage sons.

Flatt will be available outside the Besse Theater on the Escanaba Campus after her talk to sign copies of her book, which will be available for purchase. This presentation is free to attend and open to the public.

Starting at $3.50/week.
