Woman injured in IM standoff to face charges
IRON MOUNTAIN — A woman who was subdued with less-than-lethal bean bag rounds after emerging from a basement with a handgun during a Sept. 20 standoff in Iron Mountain has been released from a Green Bay, Wis., hospital and is awaiting extradition to Dickinson County, Director of Police and Fire Services Jeff Solka said Wednesday.
Solka noted in a news release that while bean bag rounds are designed to minimize injury, they can still cause harm. Emergency care was provided on site to the 50-year-old female by Integrity Care EMS and Iron Mountain Fire Department.
“The suspect was transported to Marshfield Dickinson hospital for treatment and later transferred to Green Bay for further care,” Solka said.
Following her release from the hospital, the woman has been arrested on charges related to the incident, Solka said. Details will be disclosed once she has been extradited and arraigned in Dickinson County, he said.
In a Sept. 24 news release, it was reported that Iron Mountain Police Department had responded to a woman barricaded with a handgun on the northside of the city.
During the incident, two rounds were discharged by the woman from the basement in the direction of responders, Solka said.
A Critical Incident Response Team was later able to establish communication with the woman several times until she ceased all contact. CIRT secured the residence to ensure the safety of the public, Solka said.
“While negotiators were continuing to attempt contact, the suspect exited the basement while still armed with the handgun,” he said. “In response, a CIRT officer deployed a 12-gauge, less-than-lethal bean bag round to disarm her and prevent escalation to lethal force.”
In the initial news release, information on the age, gender and status of the person subdued was not immediately released.
“We understand that initial information was limited and some details were withheld until we could confirm their accuracy,” Solka said. “We appreciate the community’s understanding as we prioritized the health and safety of everyone involved.”
In addition to the CIRT team, Iron Mountain Police Department was assisted by Michigan State Police, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Kingsford Public Safety, Norway Police Department and Integrity Care EMS.
