KINGSFORD — A Hometown Heroes commemorative event is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Lodal Park in Kingsford.

The event will be a way to honor area veterans and their families and bring emphasis to the Hometown Heroes banners that will hang on utility poles at the park from Memorial Day until after Labor Day.

The council approved a request Monday for $900 to be used for food and refreshments and decorations for the celebration, which is free and open to the public.

The Kingsford High School Band will also perform.

In other business, the council:

— Approved the sale of seven city lots on Evergreen Court across from Commemorative Field. The lots vary in size from .85 acres to 1.17 acres. They were priced at $16,000 per acre and were sold to AE Moyle Homes LLC of the Houghton area. According to City Manager Mike Stelmaszek, the company plans to built houses in two different styles — 1,800-square-foot single-story with a basement or 2,200-square-foot split-level with no basement. The houses will have an estimated value of $250,000, which will provide additional tax revenues.

— Received an update on infrastructure projects taking place in the city this summer. The list includes well No. 5 rehabilitation work, a lift station abandonment on Bancroft Street, and sewer main, water main, and service line replacement work underway in the Ford Addition. Work is also underway on East Breen Avenue from Carpenter Avenue to the city limits, and on one block of Woodbine, to replace the aging water main and access lines in this section of the city. Once completed, the roads on these two streets will be completely resurfaced. When the work is finished this fall, both Drinking Water State Revolving Fund project No. 2 and Clean Water State Revolving Fund project No. 3 will be complete.

— Approved a request to approve a Neighborhood Enterprise Zone in the area south of Breitung Avenue. The zone will allow residents to add value to a residential property with the taxable value frozen prior to any improvements. The added value would be exempt from taxation for a length of time determined by the council, between six to 11 years. Tony Edlebeck of the Dickinson Area Economic Development Alliance told the council the new zone should help create positive improvements for the neighborhood.

— Learned from Jeff DeMuri, public works supervisor, that the 7 acres acquired by the city as part of Lodal Park have been cleared of trees. The council accepted a bid of $2,000 from Coleman Engineering to create a topographical survey of the property to see what elevation would fit best for city use and how much fill will be needed.

— Learned from Kyle Mulka, city assessor, that he will meet with the owners of two condemned properties that are scheduled for demolition. He is working with the Dickinson County Construction Code Commission and the owners to figure out a time frame for this. He added that it’s possible the city may contract out for the demolition of one or both of the properties and add the cost to the owner’s tax bill.

— Will hold a hearing on June 1 for a variance request for a fence setback on Balsam Avenue.
