George Stockero Sr.

CASPIAN — George Guido Stockero Sr., 77, of Caspian, passed away at the Omega House Hospice Facility in Houghton on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. He was born on Feb. 25, 1940, in Hermansville, son of the late Guido and Emma (Marana) Stockero. He moved to Stambaugh as young child. On Sept. 4, 2001, George married Barbara (née Woons) and the couple resided in Caspian.

George graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1958. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology education from Northern Michigan University. George taught high school biology for 30 years, the first two in Beaverton, Mich., and the remainder at Forest Park High School, where he retired in 1992. After his retirement, he worked as a ski instructor at Ski Brule for 25 years. For the past three summers, he worked at the George Young Golf Course.

An avid hunter, George made daily visits to his camp in Iron River Township. He enjoyed hosting many get-togethers for family, friends and classmates. He was instrumental in helping to form the Iron County Bowhunters Club, which held their semi-annual banquet at his camp. He spent much of his free time playing smear at camp with his “card buddies.” George was also an avid golfer and enjoyed wintering in Arizona. He was often seen doing his five-mile walks in Iron County.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jerold Saundri.

George is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, George Jr. (Shari) of Chassell and Geoffry (Terri Hughes) of Petoskey; step-daughter Stacy (Brett) Rodriguez of Greenfield, Wis.; step-son, Ryan (Kelley) Lindberg of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Zachary (Emily) Stockero, Andrew Stockero, Brooke and Chloe Rodriguez, and Jaxon and Sloane Lindberg. He is further survived by his sister, Nancy Saundri; brother-in-law, George (Beverly) Woons; three nieces, Kathryn (Dan) Brugman, Jane (Don) Palmer, and Rebecca (Mike) Mannikko; and special cousin, Larry (Susan) Polich.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 5. Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian, with Fr. Gregory Veneklase officiating.
