KENOSHA, Wis. — Robert G. Pozza, 88, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, peacefully in the comfort of his home.
Bob was born in Iron Mountain on June 21, 1935, the son of Bert and Dorothy Pozza.
He attended Iron Mountain High School and graduated in 1953. He was vice president of his graduating class and was an outstanding football and basketball player and captained those teams.
In 1957, Bob graduated from St. Norbert College and was co-captain and voted the most valuable football player in 1956.
He obtained his master’s degree at the University of Michigan in 1965, where he was awarded a National Science Foundation Scholarship. He also did post-graduate work at Bemidji State College and Central Michigan University.
On Aug. 17, 1957, in Kenosha, Bob married his sweetheart, Sharon Regnier.
Bob started his teaching and coaching career in Essexville, Mich., at St. John High School, where he was the biology instructor and head coach of all sports.
From 1960-1964 he taught at Lena High School in Lena, Wis., where he was also the head football coach. After receiving his master’s in 1965, Bob began his teaching and coaching career at Lance Jr. High School where he was also head football coach. In 1970 he moved over to Tremper High School where he taught ecology and genetics and was also the defensive high school football coach. He later taught anatomy and physiology and was so proud to be teaching at Tremper until his retirement in 1998.
Bob was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for teaching in Kenosha in 1991. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award and was inducted into the Kenosha Sports Hall of Fame.
Bob served as a trustee for Mt. Carmel Church for 40 years.
He loved nature, golf, watching his grandchildren grow up, and the University of Michigan football.
Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sharon; his son Robert Todd of Florida; his daughters, Laura (Tim) Gascoigne, Pamela Pozza, Roberta Romero and Regina Pozza, all of Kenosha; his sisters, Mary (Robert) Knoke of Michigan and Pat O’Neil of South Carolina; his eight grandchildren, Nicole Pozza, Joe Pozza, Breanna Gascoigne, Brock Gascoigne, Brooke Gascoigne, Roscoe Romero, Catrina Romero and Alexa Pozza; and his seven great-grandchildren, Konner, Catalina, Peyton, Richie, Sonny, Luka and Ora.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bert Jr., Joseph and James; and his granddaughter, Brittni.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at St. Marks Catholic Church, located at 7117 14th Avenue in Kenosha.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass on Tuesday at the church.
Burial will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery.
