THREE LAKES, Wis. — Most of the time, in any given sport, the most well-rounded team comes out on the winning end of things. Thursday night, the Three Lakes Lady Bluejays were nearly as well- rounded as a team could be in defeating Florence in straight sets — 25-11, 25-18 and 25-23 — in WIAA Division 4 girls volleyball tournament action.

Despite seeing her team’s season come to an end, Florence head coach Joan Canfield was optimistic. “I am very proud of this Lady Cats team. Our numbers were low this year and one of the top hitters in our conference, Kendra Milan, went down with a torn ACL.”

Milan suffered her injury Sept. 14 in the Great 8 tournament at West Iron.

“We had to pull two full time freshmen from the JV leaving them short and having to cancel our remaining JV matches,” Canfield said. “But, we continued to play hard and improved with every match.”

Set No. 1 saw the Lady Cats come out slow, and they were overpowered by the Three Lakes net play. Most of the Bluejays’ roster was 5’10” or taller. As they shuffled players in and out of the match, and went through their regular rotation, their net players were too much to overcome throughout the night.

As the second set went along, the Bobcats got stronger in their serving, and were much more competitive. The Springer twins, Jenna and Jordyn, served well. Lacey Enders and Sydney Tomczak were strong at the net, as was Jenna Springer.

The serving of Tomczak got Florence off to a hot start in the third set and a 6-2 lead. That had the host Bluejays reeling a bit for the first time in the match. T-L closed the gap a little, but the younger Tomczak sister, Morgan, took the ball and served her team to a 17-8 advantage.

The Bluejays, however, went on a seven-point scoring run to get the score within one at 16-17. It went back and forth until Three Lakes won the highly contested set to end the match.

Canfield said Three Lakes was as skilled as any team the Bobcats played throughout the season.

After the match, Canfield told the team that she’s retiring from her position as head coach. After 21 total years of coaching, seven of them as the varsity coach at Florence, Canfield said she feels good about her decision.

Three Lakes will host Laona-Wabeno Saturday evening at 5 p.m. in the sectional quarterfinal match.
