Bobcats downed in second round

SHELL LAKE, Wis. — Florence stayed with Shell Lake for three quarters until falling 39-6 in a WIAA second round eight-player state playoff game Friday.

William Liebergen’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled the Bobcats to within 19-6 late in the third quarter, but the Lakers reeled off three touchdowns in the fourth to end Florence’s season.

Miscues on snaps and several turnovers helped spoil the Bobcats’ chances. Shell Lake senior Joseph Uchytil was a disrupter on defense throughout the night. “We had five turnovers, it killed us. The bad snaps didn’t help either,” said Florence head coach Kent Walstrom.

Offensively, the Bobcats were led by Kaden Schuls who threw for 106 yards, caught six passes for 75 yards, and rushed for 48 yards. He surpassed the 1200 yards rushing mark for the season at 1203. Riley Hixon snared 3 passes for 92 yards for Florence. Braden Boettcher passed for 130 yards on nine completions.

Tyler Green ran for three Shell Lake TDs, including a 3-yard run early in the fourth that put the Lakers up 25-6. Jordan Aronson’s 82-yard run with 5:24 remaining put the game out of reach.

Sam Negus and Tyler Schunck also ran for touchdowns as Shell Lake improved to 10-1.

Schuls had 15 tackles and an interception, his eighth on the season, which is a new school record. Matthew Johnson registered nine tackles, and Austin Hoey had seven. “The kids work so hard all year, they feel really bad that they didn’t play their best game tonight. Things unravelled in the fourth quarter” Walstrom said. The Bobcats finished at 8-3.

Florence 0 0 6 0 — 6

Shell Lake 0 19 0 20 — 39
