IM lands three on U.P. Dream Team

Mountaineers unanimous Class C team of the year; Johnson earns top honor

Theresa Proudfit/The Daily News IRON MOUNTAIN’S MARCUS JOHNSON was named the U.P. Small School Offensive Player of the Year.

MARQUETTE — On Thursday, the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association met at the Holiday Inn in Marquette to choose the 2019 UP High School Football teams. Area teams were well represented as both 11-player and 8-player selections.

In 11-player, the undefeated Iron Mountain Mountaineers were named unanimous Class C Team of the Year, and head coach Robin Marttila was named Small School Coach of the Year. The Mountaineers were also the unanimous No. 1 team in the final UPSSA Small School Poll of the season.

Iron Mountain had three players named to the 11-player all class Dream Team. Senior Marcus Johnson at quarterback, senior Gio Colavecchi at center, and junior Caleb Evosevich-Hynes at linebacker.

Johnson, who was named the West PAC Copper Division Co-offensive Player of the Year earlier this week, was selected as Small School Offensive Player of the Year by the UPSSA .

He was also selected first team West PAC Copper Division at quarterback, passing for 722 yards and seven touchdowns, on 43 of 57 passing, a 75 percent completion percentage. He also rushed for six touchdowns, and returned a defensive interception for a 68-yard touchdown.

Gio Colavecchi

Colavecchi, a three-year starter on the Iron Mountain line, was also named to the West PAC Copper Division, where he was also Honorable Mention as Lineman of the Year, at center. Coach Marttila stated that Colavecchi is the Mountaineers’ best lineman.

Evosevich-Hynes was named the West PAC Copper Division Special Teams Player of the Year, and honorable mention as Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a first team selection at both running back and linebacker in the Copper Division of the West PAC.

Also selected to the Dream Team was West Iron County’s Dakota Hawkes at Guard. Hawkes, a third year starter at right guard, was an instrumental part of both the offensive and defensive lines of the Wykons. He’s started in 26 wins and a state semifinal appearance.

He was also named to the West PAC Iron Division team at Guard.

On the 8-player side of things, the undefeated North Central Jets were named unanimous 8-player team of the year. Head coach Leo Gorzinski was named 8-player Coach of the Year.

CALEB EVOSEVICH-HYNES

North Central senior quarterback Noah Gorzinski was named Offensive Player of the Year, and also the Dream Team quarterback. He finished the regular season with 1,793 yards and 33 touchdowns. He threw for 13 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Noah also ran for 456 yards and 11 touchdowns and had 475 yards receiving, including six scores. He was named to the Great Lakes Eight all-conference team at both quarterback and defensive back. He was also named to the West Division team of the conference.

Jets freshman defensive end Luke Gorzinski was also named to the 8-player Dream Team, as was senior linebacker Leo Gorzinski Jr. Both Leo Jr. and Luke were named to the West Division team of the Great Lakes Eight Conference, while Leo Jr. was named All-Conference at linebacker.

The Forest Park Trojans had four players selected to the 8-player Dream Team. Seniors Evan Hedtke, Tommy Peltoma, and Noah Gilner, while junior Gabe Scarlassara also was selected as a dream team player. All four players were selected to the Great Lakes Eight West Division team.

Hedtke was a selection at two positions, as an offensive lineman and also as the kicker. Hedtke was also the Great Lakes Eight all-conference kicker and on the offensive line.

DAKOTA HAWKES

Peltoma was a Dream Team defensive tackle selection, as well as being named the offensive hybrid player on the Great Lakes Eight all-conference team. Gilner was selected to the Dream Team as a defensive end.

Scarlassara, named to the Dream Team as a linebacker, was named all-conference in the Great Lakes Eight as a defensive back.

Area players that were selected to the first team in 11-player: For Iron Mountain on the Small School

team seniors Jacob Dumas at defensive end and Nick Opolka at guard. Mountaineer junior Caleb Burklund was a first team defensive line selection.

For the West Iron County Wykons, senior defensive end Brayden Nelson, junior running back Nathan Thomson and senior linebacker Noah Thomson were also Small School Selections.

Kingsford defensive tackle, senior Ed Cardew was named to the large school team. Two Norway seniors were named to the small school team, tight end Kody Hendricks, and kicker Nathan Paulitch.

First team 8-player selections for the area: North Central senior Cole Timblin at running back, and North Dickinson wide receiver, senior Cameron Schultz. Nordics senior Brandon Thao was also a first team selection at linebacker.

Forest Park had three players on the 8-player first team selections, all on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore Tim Bendick at defensive tackle, defensive end, junior Tommy Showers, and Hedtke at punter.

Special Mentions (two or more votes) for the area were Bryce Pietrantonio of Iron Mountain, a junior linebacker, and Kingsford’s Carter Kreski, a junior linebacker.

Honorable Mentions for the area are sophomore offensive lineman Lane Nehring of North Central, Iron Mountain senior offensive tackle Tony Feira, Kingsford offensive lineman, senior Zach Wood, and West Iron senior linebacker Trey Bociek.
