Cross unloads for 17, Flivvers drop Nordics

Matt McCarthy/The Daily News Kingsford’S Brooke Kriegl (11) dribbles past Norway’s McKenna Neuens (12) as Kingsford’s Kate Cook (12) prevents Kaitlyn Hosking from entering the play, Tuesday night.

KINGSFORD — Kingsford applied stifling defensive pressure to Norway, and Lizzy Cross drained five 3-pointers on her way to a game high 17 points, as the Flivvers cruised past the Knights 59-23 in game two of a non-conference boys/girls doubleheader here Tuesday night.

Kingsford collected 24 steals, which helped them generate points in transition. “We got off to a great start, which I was very happy about,” said Flivvers head coach Lisa Harry. “It was a tough loss last night (Monday to West Iron) and we had to forget quick and refocus for tonight.”

Harry noted how well Cross shot in the game, while also saying, “Olivia Olkkonen ran the floor well, and Brooke (Kriegl) found her for some easy buckets. It was a nice team effort and win for us tonight.”

Up next for the Flivvers (5-8) is their third non-conference home game of the week, facing Forest Park on Thursday.

The Knights (1-14) travel to North Central on the same night, for a Skyline Conference game. Cadeance Lindsley led Norway with eight points on the evening.

“It was Kingsford’s night. They are playing well at the right time of the season,” said Norway head coach Joe Tinti. “We had a hard time breaking the pressure of Kriegl and company. They dictated the tempo of the game and never allowed us to get into an offensive set.”

Tinti also noted that he hopes that the game was another learning moment for the Knights’ young team.

The JV game was a battle of undefeated teams, which ended 32-30 in favor of Kingsford. Flivvers’ Laura Bracket led all scorers with 13 points, while Andi Carlson led Norway with 11.
