North Dickinson rolls in district opener

SOUTH REPUBLIC – Senior Brianna Smith and sophomore Ashton Hord each netted 18 points, as U.P.S.S.A. No. 4 ranked North Dickinson cruised past winless Republic-Michigamme 61-18 in MHSAA Division 4 District 99 action here on Monday night.

The Nordics and head coach Kirk Mattson, who improve to 19-2 on the season, also had Hannah Clark score in double figures with 15 points.

“I thought Republic played well in the first quarter and were aggressive,” Mattson said. “They played very hard the whole game.”

The Hawks finished the season at 0-21.

Mattson said that the Nordics didn’t rebound all that well in the first half, but responded well on the glass in the second half.

“Our focus tonight was to work on some things we normally don’t during most games, and get some different lineups in the game that normally don’t play together,” Mattson said. “Good overall team win.”

The Nordics return home for the next round of district play. North Dickinson will host long time rival Forest Park on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium.

North Dickinson won both meetings with the Skyline Central rival in the regular season, defeating the Trojans at home on Jan. 21 by a score of 39-34. On Feb. 20, ND defeated Forest Park 47-36 at the Eddie Chambers Memorial Gym in Crystal Falls.
