NORWAY — Raymond Bray was a standout athlete at Norway High School, graduating in 1970.

He was also a teacher and coach in the district for many years. Bray battled cancer and died March 18, 2019, at the age of 67.

The “Too Strong” Award represents the Norway Knights athlete who showed the willingness to play strong at every practice or game. When that athlete stepped on the football field or basketball court, they battled and did all they could do. They “Fought The Fight.”

Bray’s philosophy on athletics is described as follows:

It was not always about the athlete who had the most yards or scored the most points. Playing was about being strong physically and giving it all you had. He believed in the underdog and gave all players a fair shot.

He believed in teamwork, respect, “blasting” you when you needed it and lifting you up when for a job well done.

He wanted the best out of every player, using motivational quotes like: “Work hard and you will be rewarded” and “body to body, shoulder to shoulder, you are better if you believe it kid.”

In wins and loses he’d often say: “The sun will come up tomorrow,” “Defense wins games” and “A bad shot is better than a turnover.”

The award will be given out annually to a varsity basketball player and a varsity football player, offense or defense.

The 2020 recipients are Kody Hendricks in boys basketball and Hunter McCarthy in football.
