Flivvers fall to Redettes; look for steady improvement as quick season progresses

MARQUETTE — The Kingsford Flivvers girls tennis team traveled to Marquette on Monday morning for Great Northern Conference action. The home Redettes defeated Kingsford 6-2 at Marquette Senior High School.

Kingsford’s two wins on the day came from their No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams. No. 1 Teagan Petschar and Lizzy Cross easily defeated their Marquette opponents in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Jenna Olkkonen and Liz Penegor took their match in two sets as well, 6-3, 6-0.

“Marquette is a very solid team, always a great challenge for us. No. 1 and 2 doubles continue to play fast paced matches together,” said Kingsford head coach Tracy Rutter. “Everyone is doing well. There will be a few lineup changes over the next week until we get the right combinations and placements. Brooke (Bittinger) and Macy (Holmes) at No. 3 doubles had another tough match. They continue to play 100% until the end.”

Rutter added that Kylie Mitchell, at No. 2 singles, played great for her first time as a varsity singles matchup.

“Her score doesn’t reflect her hustle,” Rutter noted.

The Flivvers have a quick turnaround, traveling to Escanaba today for another Great Northern Conference matchup.

The 2020 Flivvers have some familiar faces on its roster, while having some new names as well. The Flivvers show a roster of more than 20 girls, including five seniors and nine juniors. Kingsford competes once again in Division 1 for the postseason.

Cross is reigning U.P. champion at No. 3 singles. The senior shifted to play No. 1 doubles with fellow senior Petschar.

Rutter is assisted by volunteer assistant coach Aaron Rochon, the duo leading the Flivvers through a quick five-week season, with U.P. Finals tentatively scheduled to take place around Sept. 30.

“With the uncertainty of the times we are in, our entire team is grateful for even having a season. We are taking the approach of one match at a time,” Rutter said.

“Obviously with GNCs and UPs in our sights and hopefully to have those final two big meets be able to be played,” Rutter said. “Lizzy Cross would love a repeat.”

Rutter added, “I’d love Liz (Penegor) and Jenna (Olkkonen) to take GNCs and UPs, as they fell short last season. We definitely have several girls I think can continue to be competitive as the season progresses. Another year with great team numbers, love to see the program thriving.”
