Wisconsin prep hoops preview: Ladycats will be a work in progress
FLORENCE, Wis. — One thing that can certainly be said about the Florence girls basketball team for the current 2020-21 season is that it lacks players with varsity experience.
Head coach Brad Perry returns only one player who played on the varsity full time last season, in senior Lacey Enders. Enders, who was a starter in 2019-20, is also the only senior on the Ladycats roster this season.
Junior Paige Uren played eight games on the varsity last season Perry noted. Kiera Sullivan and Audrey Seldon also played in a handful of varsity games last season.
“We’re going to be a work in progress the majority of the season,” Perry said. “As long as the girls improve a little in each game and work hard in practice, that’s what I’ll ask of them.”
Perry also noted that he will rely heavily on Enders leadership as the lone senior on this years squad.
Upon being asked how she feels about taking on the “mother hen” roll with this years team, Enders replied with a smile “I am fine with that. I like the girls that we have, and coach Brad, he has already talked to me about being the team captain and having a strong leadership roll for the team.”
Gone from last season roster due to graduation are starters Jordyn and Jenna Springer, Madison Neuens and Haley Berhmann. Also graduated from last seasons roster is Faith Neuens.
“Having to replace four of our five starters from a year ago will make the season a challenge,” Perry said. “But this group has worked hard thus far this season and I look forward to their improvement as the season goes along.”
Perry expects Crandon and Laona-Wabeno to be strong in the Northern Lakes Conference. Three Lakes, who also had a strong volleyball team, will be a formidable opponent for mostteams Perry added.
The Ladycats, who currently sit a 0-2 on the young season, travel to non-conference foe Wausaukee tonight. Florence doesn’t have a JV roster this season, with all players in grades 9-12 being on the varsity roster for the season.
