FLORENCE, Wis. — With three players in double figures, led by a double-double from junior Patrick Millan of 25 points and 17 rebounds, Florence defeated Crandon 69-57 here Friday night in Northern Lakes Conference action.

Point guard Evan Johnson added 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while freshman Logan Schuls chipped in 13 points off the bench for the Bobcats.

Florence overcame four Crandon players scoring in double figures, led by Devin Headson with 12 points.

The Cardinals opened in a 2/3 zone defense, getting out to an early 5-2 lead.

“Crandon threw the first punch, and we didn’t respond well,” said Florence head coach Bryan Bomberg. “We were exposed on a few things tonight, and we need to fix them.”

The Bobcats began attacking the basket in their half-court offensive sets, and took a 19-13 lead with 5:02 left in the first half. As the half wore down to the last two minutes, the Cardinals made a run and tied the game at 23-23 with 1:52 remaining.

On the Bobcats’ last possession of the first half, Johnson drained a three-pointer to give the home team a 27-25 lead at the half.

“Our half court defense wasn’t very good tonight, we weren’t putting our hands up,” Bomberg said.

With a tad under 10 minutes remaining, Florence got out to a 52-43 lead. The remainder of the game, the Bobcats played hard on both ends of the floor, while seeing the floor well offensively and making good decisions.

Once Florence extended their lead to 63-50, they were again able to apply pressure defensively and improved their record to 9-3.

Millan was very strong underneath the basket in the low post.

“That’s what Patty (Millan) does for us, he works hard and reads his defenders well,” Bomberg said. “Our guards do a great job of getting him the basketball, and he’s relentless under there.”

The Bobcats won the JV game 53-46, with Schuls netting 26 points.

Florence returns to action Tuesday when they host NLC foe Elcho.

THREE LAKES, Wis. — Goodman-Pembine’s Boone Larison had 25 points as the Patriots triumphed over Three Lakes 63-55 in Northern Lakes Conference action.

“It was a hard fought game, with Three Lakes leading at halftime 31-26,” said Patriots head coach Joe Nutt. “We took the lead with five minutes to go and knocked down our free throws at the end of the game to seal the win.”

Nutt noted that the team played hard for him in his return to the team. The coach, who is grieving the recent loss of his father due to COVID-19, had taken some time away from the team.
