Massey’s, Dettman’s double-doubles lead Goodman-Pembine past White Lake

WHITE LAKE, Wis. — Behind double-doubles from Grace Massey, 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Sierra Dettman with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Goodman-Pembine got its second win of the season Thursday over White Lake 48-40 in non-conference girls basketball.

“The girls played well against White Lakes’ 2-1-2 defense, in the first half. We moved the basketball real well, looking for the open shots,” said Patriots head coach Brian Waitrovich.

“In the second half, White Lake changed to a trap defense, and we started turning the ball over and they began to trim our lead,” he added.

The Lakers eventually took the lead and the second half was a see-saw contest.

“Grace (Massey) showed great leadership on the floor tonight,” Waitrovich said.

“Sierra (Dettman), who hardly ever played basketball in her life, had career highs in points and rebounds tonight. She’s come a long way this season.”

Waitrovich noted that the girls did the right things down the stretch to come away with the win.

Hermansville native George Maule Jr. is guiding the Lady Lakers for the rest of the season, due to the recent resignation of the head coach. Maule is also the athletic director at White Lake.

The Patriots finished the varsity portion of the 2021 schedule at 2-5 with Thursday night’s win. On Jan. 19 the Patriots were defeated by Laona-Wabeno in a JV contest at Pembine High School, 36-19.

G-P has two JV games remaining on their schedule, Thursday they travel to Laona-Wabeno. On Feb. 9, the Patriots play their last game of the season, a JV game versus Crandon at Goodman-Armstrong Creek High School.

Feb. 9 will be parents night and senior night for the Patriots. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. from the Laverne A. Zimmerman Sports Center.
