Flivver boys sink Wykons

IRON RIVER — Kingsford pulled away in the third quarter and defeated West Iron 63-40 in non-conference boys basketball Friday.

The Wykons led 20-18 at halftime, but the Flivvers sparked in the second half behind the scoring of Nick Nora, Cole Bracket and Brody Kopp.

“It definitely was a good team second half,” said Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen. “It seemed like there was a lid on the rim in the first half.”

The Flivvers (4-1) were playing their third road game in four nights while the Wykons (2-4) were missing two starters.

“We’re presently having a hard time scoring,” said West Iron coach Dan Schive.

West Iron’s Justin Nelson led all scorers with 19 points. Nora and Bracket had 15 apiece for the Flivvers and Kopp finished with 12.

Zach Person added 10 points for Kingsford, his best output of the season. Alex Wickstrom netted 10 for the Wykons.

Three Great Northern Conference games are on tap for Kingsford — at Menominee on Monday and Gladstone on Thursday before a home game Friday against Marquette.

“It’s a big week for us in the conference,” Olkkonen said.

West Iron’s Nathan Lundin is out for the season with a knee injury while Nathan Thomson is slated to return Thursday at Ironwood, Schive said. The Wykons travel to undefeated Iron Mountain on Monday for a West PAC Conference game. Iron Mountain defeated Hancock Friday night, 67-31.

Kingsford JVs won 56-33 behind Isaac Nash’s 13 points.
