Girls basketball: Ishpeming tops Iron Mountain; FP, NC defeated

Wykon girls derail Flivvers

ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain was held to two points in the first quarter and fell to Ishpeming 45-36 in a West PAC and Mid-Peninsula Conference game Monday.

“We really struggled in the first half to get our offense moving,” said Iron Mountain coach Karen Ellis. “Our defense was focused on shutting (Jenna) Maki down. We held her to four points in the first half, which was great, but Ishpeming is an all-around great shooting team.”

The Mountaineers were led by Chloe Maycroft’s 14 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Anslee Runsat chipped in 11 points.

“Our inside players carried us tonight and did a great job inside,” Ellis said.

Hannah DeLoughary paced the Hematites with 13 points while Maki and Olivia Corp finished with 10 apiece.

Ishpeming coach Ryan Reichel was pleased with his team’s balanced scoring.

“I thought Olivia Corp coming in and scoring 10 for us off the bench gives our team a huge boost going in to districts,” he said. “Also Hannah DeLoughary did a great job finding open spots for us.”

The Ishpeming JVs won 44-32, despite 13 points from Iron Mountain’s Maycroft.

Forest Park 29

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau girls came out hot and didn’t stop Monday in a 64-29 Skyline Central Conference basketball victory over Forest Park in Carney.

The Wolves outscored the Trojans 27-12 in the first half and didn’t let up after to seal the game.

“Our defense was really good again tonight,” Wolves coach Ken Linder said. “We really moved the ball well. We had three people in double figures. That was good, balanced scoring. We really worked the ball well and pushed the ball well.”

Tessa Wagner led the Wolves with 22 points and a double-double, and Haley Ernest also finished the night with a double-double (17 points and 14 rebounds). Shae Linder chipped in 11.

The Trojans were led by senior Lea LaChapelle with 15 points.

“Carney has all of the pieces, they are tough to slow down. Our girls were a little more aggressive offensively and defensively we made some stops but we just couldn’t handle Wagner,” said Forest Park head coach Kim Bjork.

Carney (16-0), which also won the JV game, hosts Mid Peninsula Friday. The Lady Trojans (1-10) travel to Stephenson tonight for another SCC game.

Bark River-Harris 54

North Central 39

HARRIS — After a disordered first quarter, the Bark River-Harris girls basketball team found its groove in the second and fourth to slide by North Central 54-39 Monday at Bark River.

The Jets took a 10-9 lead over the Broncos in the first quarter but were quickly eclipsed in the second as the Broncos put up 23 more before the half.

“We were sloppy in the first quarter tonight,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “It just took us a while to get our feet wet. It seemed like we couldn’t get it rolling until that second quarter. North Central was playing good defense and limiting our shot attempts.”

Bark River’s Cara Zawacki — its leading scorer with 20, tying a career-high — was instrumental in the second quarter, scoring 11 of her 20 points.

“We needed her in that second quarter,” Richer said. “She got us going, and hit six for six from the free throw line. She kind of bailed us out in the second quarter. It gave us a pretty nice cushion.”

The Jets responded in the third, outscoring the Broncos 14-7 and cutting their deficit to 39-32.

“It just seemed like offensively, we couldn’t get into a rhythm tonight for a lot of the game,” Richer said.

The Broncos bounced back in the fourth to seal the game.

“It’s always good to beat your rival,” Richer said. “North Central, I give them credit. They came to play tonight. They kind of gave us trouble with some of the things they were doing defensively.”

Andie Arsenault led the Jets with 19 points.

Bark River travels to Munising Wednesday, and North Central visits Superior Central Thursday.

West Iron 49

Kingsford 33

STAMBAUGH — Kingsford senior Christina Glodowski led all scorers with 16 points, but it was West Iron who came away with a 49-33 non-conference girls basketball victory Monday night at the Charles Greenlund Memorial Gymnasium.

Senior Livea Mazurek led the Wykon girls with 12 points.

“Give credit to West Iron, they were scrappy and they played hard,” said Kingsford head coach Jon Lorenzoni.

“Christy Glodowski had a nice game, especially in the second half. She knocked down some shots and was aggressive at the rim. I thought Erica Malone played well, on the defensive end she was solid,” Lorenzoni added.

Head coach Eric Shamion and the Wykons, who improved to 7-7 on the season, travel to Forest Park on Thursday.

The Flivvers, who fell to 1-11 on the season, travel to Great Northern Conference foe Escanaba on Thursday, to wrap up their regular season.
