Jets, Flivvers victorious, Nordics fall to undefeated BR-H
POWERS — With a little separation at halftime, the North Central boys basketball team was able to pull away in the second half, earning a 54-46 triumph over Forest Park in Powers Tuesday.
“We played pretty good tonight,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “We again had stretches where we played the game well, and we had stretches where we didn’t know what gym we were in.”
Emerging from the locker room, North Central found a weak point in the Trojans’ defense and outscored them 22-11 in the third quarter to seal the win.
“I thought our three seniors stepped up and played a solid game and everyone worked hard tonight we just couldn’t get over the hump,” said Forest Park second year head coach Kurt Lehmann. “We couldn’t get the big stop we needed when we had it close and couldn’t hit the big shots when we really needed them.”
North Central hosts Hannahville Monday, while Forest Park hosts Ewen-Trout Creek on Thursday and cross county rival West Iron on Friday.

“Bark River’s team is very deep,” said Nordics coach Chris Mattson. “They’re big and physical and we didn’t compete very well.”
Nick Javurek led the Broncos’ balanced attack with 12 points. Maximus Mattson scored eight for the Nordics.

Flivvers down
Wolves, 63-55
CARNEY — Beau Koffman and Mike Flanagan scored 16 points each here Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Carney-Nadeau Wolves from dropping a 63-55 non-conference decision to the Kingsford Flivvers.
The Flivvers were led by Zach Person’s 15 points. Cole Bracket added 14. Brody Kopp hit 12 and Mike Meneguzzo had 11.
“We had pretty consistent scoring and effort tonight throughout the game. Carney does a nice job of setting up their guys for the 3-point shot, and does a good job of knocking them down” said veteran Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen. “We were able to run the court pretty well and get to the basket, but had a few too many turnovers down the stretch. This was a good team win in a tough place to play.”
C-N hit 18-of-53 field goals, 9-of-11 free throws and committed eight turnovers.
“We’ve been 10 or below (turnovers) most of the season,” said C-N coach Paul Polfus. “We’ve done pretty well with that and at the free throw line, we shot well.”
The non-conference loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Wolves, who fell to 5-4.
“I’m pretty happy with the way the kids played,” said Polfus. “They kept competing, which is what I want to see them do. We had some decent looks at the basket in the first half, but didn’t shoot very well (6-27). We shot better in the second half (12-26).
The Wolves host Menominee Thursday. The Flivvers (6-3) host North Dickinson Thursday in a non-conference game.
The JV game was also won by Kingsford, by the score of 73-29. Ben Trevillian poured in 22 points for Kingsford.
