North Central boys tame Eagles

Wykons bounce Norway

POWERS — Thanks to big first and fourth quarters, the North Central boys basketball team topped Stephenson 64-52 in Powers Friday.

After the first quarter, the Jets led by nine (19-10), but a colder second quarter only extended that lead by one.

“It was a good battle back and forth the entire game,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “Stephenson runs a very active 1-3-1 that creates chaos, and they trap and rotate very well. Had they converted on more of their free throws, it would have been bad news for us. Fortunately, we came away with the ‘W’.”

The Eagles cut their deficit to 45-38 after the third but couldn’t capitalize on the momentum as the Jets put up 19 points in the fourth to seal the game.

“All my guys did a fantastic job, but tonight, we had a very important several minutes from the least likely of players,” Malone said. “Mr. Carter Tietz. He kept his head, used ball fakes and played outstanding defense. He needs to be recognized for the job he did.”

North Central hosts Superior Central Friday.

Knights, 55-43

IRON RIVER — Nate Thomson’s 24 points lifted West Iron to a 55-43 win Friday over Norway.

Thomson scored eight points in the first quarter and 11 in the third — including three triples — to spark the Wykons.

“He was a special player tonight,” said Wykons coach Dan Schive. “We scored enough around him to stay ahead.”

Justin Nelson added 15 points for West Iron, who led 26-22 at the break.

“Thomson lit us up in the third quarter,” said Norway coach Jeffrey Gallino. “I thought we did a fairly good job of surrounding the big guy (Nelson).”

The Knights were led by Nolan Amundson with 16 points and Logan Parolini with 15.

“Nolan and Logan had good nights offensively,” Gallino said.

Schive credited assistant Chris Thomson for a strong defensive scheme. “He did a nice job of putting kids in good spots to be productive,” he said.

West Iron (8-7) entertains Iron Mountain on Tuesday, while Norway (7-6) hosts Kingsford.

The Knights won the jayvee game.
