Eskymos stay perfect with win over Flivvers

Lancour scatters five hits in 10-4 victory

QUINNESEC– Escanaba remained unbeaten this season, posting a 10-4 baseball victory over the Kingsford Flivvers

Tyler Lawson collected three hits, and Collin Arnt added two for the Eskymos, who improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Great Northern Conference.

“The top of our order did a super job, and Nick Kolich got a big double in the third inning,” said Escanaba coach Scott Hanson. “We played well. That was a nice conference win for us.”

Hunter Lancour took the win in Wednesday’s contest, striking out eight and allowing four runs on five hits through six innings.

“Hunter pitched awesome,” said Hanson. “They got to Hunter a little in the first inning, then he settled in. He threw strikes and kept them off balance. Their starting pitcher (Andrew Paupore) also did a nice job. He’s crafty. He changed speeds real well and kept us off balance, but ended up throwing 80 pitches through three innings.”

“A good start for us quickly turned into walks and errors which created a mountain that we could not overcome,” said Kingsford head coach Matt LaLonde.

After starting out with two runs in the first inning, and Andrew Paupore striking out five of the first six batters faced, it seemed like everything was going well for the host Flivvers. That changed in the third inning when Escanaba scored three runs off of walks and errors.

“Andrew was on to start the game and he was feeling really good. Escanaba did a nice jog of taking pitches and forcing him into deep counts early on, though Andrew fought through it and battled to get the strikeouts,” LaLonde said

The Eskymos added a run in the fourth. A five-run fifth gave Escanaba a 9-2 advantage.

At the plate, Kingsford finished the game with five hits. “Hunter Lancour, kept us in check most of the game,” LaLonde added.

Nolan LaVarnway, Nathan Bousley, and Carter Kreski rounded out the pitching rotation. Kingsford’s pitchers gave up eight hits, seven walks, and had 10 strikeouts combined.

At the plate, Kingsford was lead by Kreski with a double and a single while LaVarnway, Connor Erickson, and Hunter Skoglund each recorded one hit apiece.

“It just wasn’t a good day for us defensively as we recorded six errors. It’s hard to win games when that happens,” LaLonde stated. “Take away those errors and it is a completely different ball game.”

The Flivvers return to action today, hosting Marquette at 4 p.m. in Quinnesec.
