Flivvers, Knights sweep softball twin bills

KINGSFORD — A balanced offensive attack to go along with strong defense and pitching are good combinations. Kingsford had all of the above as they swept a doubleheader from Calumet, 9-4 and 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Lodal Park.

Elaina Bortolini and Holly Richer pitched for the Flivvers, combining for 13 strikeouts. Richer fanned nine in the nightcap of the twin bill.

“Our girls were aggressive on the bases, which added some runs in the first game,” said Kingsford head coach Corissa Rice. “Our defense was great in both games, I believe we had no errors in the second game.”

Richer knocked in two runs in game one, while teammate Allie LaVarnway had two hits and a pair of stolen bases. Bortolini, Lizzy Cross and Teagan Petschar each scored twice.

Cross, Richer and Claire Phillips each cracked doubles in game one, with Richer also doubling in the second game.

In game two, the Flivvers’ main source of offense was three hits by Delaney Cram, including a double.

Kingsford returns to action Friday as they travel to Norway.

At Eben Junction Tuesday evening, Norway swept a doubleheader from Skyline Central Conference foe Superior Central, 11-1 and 14-7.

The Knights’ Donna VanHolla cracked a grandslam in game one for head coach Bob Bal and the Lady Knights. The full information on both games wasn’t available at press time.

Norway travels to Iron Mountain on Thursday before hosting Kingsford on Friday for Norway’s home opener.
