NORWAY — In a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, Norway opened its high school baseball season dropping two close games to Iron Mountain, 10-7 and 1-0.
The second game was called in the fourth inning due to darkness.
The Knights, who have only one senior on their roster — shortstop Gannon Bray — have a different head coach this season. Former head coach Tony Adams returns to the Knights dugout as head coach, with former bench boss Randy VanGasse remaining on the coaching staff.
“We have a young team. With eight sophomores and four freshmen, that’s 12 first-year players, with the sophomores not getting a chance to play last season,” Adams said.
The Mountaineers jumped ahead 7-0 in the first two innings. Seniors Ian Anderson and Bryce Pietrantonio each had two hits, with Anderson knocking in a game-high three runs.
Knights starting pitcher Nolan Amundson struck out six batters, but allowed seven runs on six hits, while walking five. Carson Chartier pitched two innings in relief for Norway.
Bray and Knights catcher Michael Peterson each drove in two runs, as the Knights scored their sevens runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
“It was good to get on the field and play today,” Adams said. Norway has only been able to have a handful of practices, with most of them indoors.
“Iron Mountain has a nice team, playing them will help us get better,” Adams said. “Once we got settled in after the second inning of the first game, we played better baseball.”
Jurgen Kleiman, Niko Burgoon and Anderson toed the mound for the Mountaineers. Kleiman picked up the win, pitching the first two innings, not allowing a hit, striking out two and allowing three walks.
Sophomore Ezekiel Runsat pitched Game 2 for the Mountaineers, hurling four strikeouts, while walking three and not allowing a hit in four innings of work.
Pietrantonio’s RBI single in the third inning plated Luke Decker, accounting for the lone run in the shortened game.
Bray and junior Chase Carlson each pitched two innings for Norway. Carlson took the loss, giving up the Mountaineers’ hit and run. The Knights pitching duo struck out a combined seven batters, while walking three.
The Mountaineers return to action this afternoon at LiUNA Field, hosting Negaunee in a makeup game from Monday. Norway travels to Crivitz on Friday for a non-conference game.
Iron Mountain travels to take on Crivitz Saturday morning.
