KINGSFORD — Junior Mya Brunswick overpowered the Westwood lineup and helped Kingsford to its first victory of the season, a 4-1 decision in what was the Flivvers’ home opener Tuesday afternoon at Lodal Park.

Brunswick went the distance for Kingsford, scattering three singles while striking out 12 and not allowing a walk or an earned run.

“I think we hit the ball a lot better tonight than our first game,” Flivvers head coach Amy Brunswick said, her team improving to 1-1. “We showed some aggressive baserunning at times, which was good. Our defense was a lot better, and the pitching was solid. She did well.”

Kingsford collected six hits and took advantage of eight walks. Sophomore Krya Clement ripped RBI singles in both the first and third innings to help the Flivvers to an early 2-0 lead, lacing a line drive to left in the first and fly ball toward the left-center gap in the third.

With the score 2-1 in the fifth, senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy added some insurance by driving in Clement with a grounder to the right side. Sophomore Allison Deuter scored the fourth run after walking, stealing second, moving to third on Shaughnessy’s groundout and then coming home on a wild pitch.

Kingsford's Kyra Clement (25) delivers one of her two hits Tuesday.

Senior Karly Trevillian added a double in the third inning, while Brunswick, sophomore Jolie Fleming and senior Adelyn Normand all had singles in the game.

Westwood’s lone run came in the fourth after a leadoff single, an error and a wild pitch with two outs.

Annika Ruspakka took the loss in the circle for the Patriots. She was charged with all four runs while striking out five.

Kingsford’s junior varsity squad pounded the Westwood jayvees 17-0 in three innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Freshman Alayna Pietrantonio led the offense with three hits and four RBI, including a two-run double. Freshman Lia Murphy added a bases-loaded triple, while sophomore Haylee Kasten and freshman Miley Bray each added two hits with doubles.

Kingsford is home again this afternoon, hosting Houghton.

Adelyn Normand (10) contributes to Kingsford's offense with a single.
