Wiltzius drains 38 in Woman’s Division title game; Bimbo’s Class A runner-up at 82nd Gold Medal Classic

HERMANSVILLE — Bay College assistant women’s basketball coach Maria Wiltzius shot the lights out Sunday, helping the Marinette, Wis., Basketball Junkies earn a 60-49 victory over Cunard BAE Massage in the championship game of the 82nd Gold Medal Classic tournament at the Meyer Township Community Club in Hermansville.

The Kingsford graduate knocked down at least a half-dozen 3-point shots in the second half and finished with 38 points.

“It’s about time,” said Wiltzius, who was selected the Women’s Division Outstanding Player. “I hadn’t been shooting that well lately. My teammates set some screens, and I was able to get open. They (BAE) were tough and scrappy. We got ahead early, but their defense got them back in the game.”

Marinette led 20-11 midway through the first half but trailed 28-22 at halftime.

Sandra Boulton’s set shot from the lane gave BAE a 23-22 lead four minutes before the half.

“We all played at different times at Michigan Tech,” said Stelzer. “It took us a little while for us to learn how to play with each other, and this morning we probably had one of better games playing together. They had some guys who could shoot the threes. If we left our foot off the gas pedal, they could come back in a hurry. This feels good. The most important thing is we were able to get together and play the game we love together.”
