ISHPEMING — In a West PAC Conference softball doubleheader, Iron Mountain defeated Ishpeming 7-6 in game one, while the host Lady Hematites won game two, 15-0 in four innings.

The lone Mountaineers senior on the roster, Claire Mongrain, pitched a complete game in the opener. She fanned two in the bottom of the 7th inning to finish with seven strikeouts.

Iron Mountain scored all seven of its runs in the 5th inning, off of clean hits, with only one walk, noted coach Bruce Tapio. Freshman McKinlee Peterson cracked a bases-loaded triple in the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, IM freshman outfielder Lindsey Sorensen ran down a fly ball with two outs and the bases loaded to end the inning.

“She misses it, the ball goes all the way to the fence and probably would have emptied the bases,” Tapio said.

Next up for the Mountaineers is the single elimination West PAC Conference tournament. The 7th-seeded Mountaineers travel to National Mine to play No. 2 seed Westwood at 10 a.m. Central time on Saturday.
