Knights and Broncos split a twin bill

BARK RIVER — The Bark River-Harris baseball team earned a split against Norway on Tuesday in Bark River.

Norway took the first game 2-1 in extra innings as Gannon Bray doubled to bring Chase Carlson in for the winning run.

Bray started the game on the mound for Norway and was relieved by Nolan Amundson — who earned the win — after five innings.

“Very proud of our kids tonight in game one,” said Knights coach Tony Adams. “At several points during the game, we could have lost our composure, but we hung tough and hopefully proved some things to ourselves.

“Bray and Amundson were very good on the mound, and we were able to manufacture enough runs to win the game.”

Nick Javurek and Travis Mack split the first game on the mound, each throwing four innings. Javurek had one strikeout with three hits while Mack threw out six Knights at the plate with two hits. Each gave up a run with Javurek’s being earned.

An abbreviated game two went the way of Bark River 4-3 in four innings.

“We decided after the first game went eight innings, given our schedules for the upcoming week, we were going to make the second game four innings,” said Broncos coach Al Botwright. “The first game was a very well played ball game on both sides. Very few errors for either team. Both teams threw a lot of strikes.

“They got a big hit that scored a run when they needed it. Our lead-off batter scored a run, and we never scored another run for 7 2/3 inning. That was kind of the story of the game right there.”

Like in the first game, the lead-off batter crossed the dish to score in the first inning for the Broncos.

“We jumped out to a lead,” said Botwright. “And our pitching, for the most part, all day was pretty darn good. I can’t complain about that.

“We made a pretty critical error in the fourth, but we battled back and ended up putting some runners on and hit a single to win the game. I guess it ended up as good as it could for us in that.”

A single off the bat of Zach Robinette brought Mack home for the win.

Max Hall (five strikeouts) was credited with the win, and Tyler Racicot (two strikeouts) the save.

Botwright also complimented the performance of Norway’s pitchers.

“Their two pitchers in the first game did a phenomenal job,” he said. “They held us to three hits over eight innings which is pretty phenomenal, and only walked two in that time.”

Norway hosts Kingsford on Thursday before traveling to Superior Central on Friday.

“The boys had mental mistakes in game two, they need to learn to keep their focus in doubleheaders,” Adams said. “Bark River is a quality, well-coached team. We have great respect for their program.”
