Wykons manage Flivvers, wind

Kingsford’s No. 1 doubles duo Christina Glodowski, left, and Caleb Boone compete against West Iron at Kingsford in a Great Northern Conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

KINGSFORD — The unbeaten West Iron boys tennis team got the best the host Kingsford Flivvers 7-1 Tuesday afternoon in a Great Northern Conference matchup.

The Wykons swept the singles matches, with the Flivvers getting their lone win of the day at No. 1 doubles. Caleb Boone and Christina Glodowski were the winning duo for the Flivvers.

“This was an interesting match due to the very windy conditions, 25 mph gusts at times,” said West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas. “As an athlete it takes time to adjust to elements that are as extreme as those and our boys did a pretty good job. The doubles matches saw lots of weird points with crazy moving lobs and missed overhead opportunities with the wind. I was happy we were able to experience extremely windy conditions before we head into the two big tournaments coming up.”

The Wykons, at 8-0-1 completed their regular season, while the Flivvers host Twin City rival Iron Mountain this afternoon in non-conference action.

“It was a tough day for tennis with the amount of wind we had to deal with today,: said Kingsford head coach Mark Novara. “Our number one doubles continue with their winning ways, which was nice to see against a great team like West Iron.

Both teams will travel to Marquette for the GNC championship meet on Thursday.
