Wykons, Miners play to draw

No decision in non-conference battle of tennis unbeatens

STAMBAUGH — A non-conference matchup of two undefeated boys tennis teams at the Nelson Field Tennis Courts in Stambaugh ended in a 4-4 tie Tuesday.

“This was a great test for our team as Negaunee has been one of the premier tennis programs in the U.P. for the past 15 years,” said veteran West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas. “We would have liked to walk away with a win but we’ll settle for the tie. Both teams performed very well today, lots of long points and good rallies.”

Singles players for the Wykons to pick up wins were Mitch Ballinger and Alex Wickstrom at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Lucas Isaacson and Cole Alexa at No. 2 doubles and the duo of Lucas Shovald and Colton Holm at No. 3 doubles won matches as well for the host Wykons.

“Credit goes to our No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles to secure the tie as both matches had tough second sets that were difficult to close out. You could see the excitement in both flights — both 3’s — as they completed their matches, the last two matches of evening. All of our losses today were competitive and not one flight was a gimme,” Serbantas said.

“Drew Alexa had a long two-hour match with his opponent and fought hard,” he added.

WIC has a quick turnaround with a home match against Great Northern Conference foe Marquette this afternoon. The Wykons will host GNC foe Gladstone on Friday.
