Wykons’ netters sweep Iron Mountain, 8-0

IRON MOUNTAIN — West Iron County opened its 2021 season by sweeping short-handed Iron Mountain, 8-0, in non-conference boys tennis Tuesday afternoon.

“This was a good start to the tennis season, and it felt good to get out and play competitive tennis on the road,” veteran West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas said. “There were many inconsistencies that we need to correct as the year continues. With a senior-loaded team, we will have advantages over other schools early in the year.”

The Wykons return to action today at Gwinn in a non-conference match before hosting Great Northern Conference foe Gladstone on Friday.

“Today was a great test for us, playing against an experienced and talented team. They have a senior-led team that has a passion for the sport, and I hope we are in a similar position in a few years,” Mountaineers head coach Marcus Celello said.

“Brenden LaPoint played an excellent match that was much closer than the score indicates. He’s jumped around a bit between one and two singles but no matter where he is any given day, he steps up and gives his best effort. I look forward to watching him and the rest of the team grow and improve throughout the season,” Celello added.

Iron Mountain returns to action Monday, as they travel to Menominee for non-conference matchup.
