Snowbirds nip Knights, 3-2

Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral earns Division 4 regional baseball crown

PELLSTON — Norway and pitcher Gannon Bray limited Gaylord St. Mary’s offense but failed to generate enough runs of their own, falling 3-2 in an MHSAA Division 4 regional final Saturday.

“We had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead and we just couldn’t get that big hit,” Norway coach Tony Adams said. “Sometimes that’s baseball.”

St. Mary Cathedral scored a run in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-2 lead and held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way.

Bray worked six innings, scattering eight hits and walking one. He struck out six.

“Gannon Bray left it all on the mound,” Adams said. “We’re thankful for what he has meant to our program. St. Mary is a good hitting team.”

The Knights managed six singles, including two by Brent Lagina. Chase Carlson, Alex Ortman, Tyler Spring and Hayden Amundson had the others.

“This was an excellent high school baseball game, which should be expected in a regional final,” Adams said. “We are extremely proud of the effort our kids put forth. Hopefully, our returning players are not content with the result today.”

Chris Koscielniak delivered three singles for the Snowbirds. Conrad Korte added a double and a single.

St. Mary’s Dillion Croff pitched the first six innings, allowing three walks and striking out four. Brody Jeffers closed the door with a perfect seventh, fanning one.

Bray is the only senior leaving Norway’s program from a roster that included three juniors, eight sophomores and four freshmen. Adams was assisted by Brian Adams, Bob Amundson and Randy Van Gasse.

Starting at $4.00/week.
