STAA claims regional baseball crown over Patriots
MARINETTE,Wis. — Goodman-Pembine’s comeback came up a little short here Wednesday in a 2-1 baseball loss to Lena-Marinette St. Thomas Aquinas in a Division 5 regional final.
This marked the first regional crown in 12 years for the Cavaliers (12-7), who will advance to the sectional tournament Tuesday at Athens. The Patriots finished 9-8.
“It was a tough game,” said Patriots’ coach Codey Ehlert. “We definitely came alive in the end. We played well. It was a well-pitched game.”
G-P’s Jacob Kessel reached base on a fielding error with one out in the sixth inning, then scored on sophomore Ryan Erickson’s single to rightfield.
The Patriots’ Bryson McVay reached on an error in the seventh, but got stranded at second.
“We were hoping to carry that over into the seventh, but couldn’t capitalize with hits,” said Ehlert. “We have a young team. We’ll be back.”
Ethan Russell scored the Cavalier’s first run on Josh Kristof’s double along the leftfield line in the first. Kristof then scored on Shallow’s sacrifice fly to center.
Shallow tossed a three-hitter, struck out six and walked one.
“I just kept pounding the strike zone and let the other guys make plays,” he said. “We had a good first inning. That gave us confidence and we pulled it out.”
Freshman Ryan Ehlert, who pitched the opening frame, took the loss. He gave up two runs on two hits and walked two. Erickson fanned six, walked none and allowed just one hit in five innings of relief.
“That was a close one,” said Cavaliers’ coach Jack Farley. “Logan pitched a great game. His control was good. We had a few errors, but Logan got out of a few jams and helped us keep it under control. ”
The Patriots had a scoring chance when Eli Marcy opened the second by reaching on a fielding miscue. Marcy, however, was thrown out trying to score on Landan Kalkofen’s single to right.
G-P committed one error and the Cavaliers finished with three.
