WEST ISHPEMING — Iron Mountain’s girls tennis opened up their 2021 season Thursday morning with dual conference action versus West PAC and Mid-Peninsula Conference foes Westwood and Ishpeming at Westwood High School.

The Lady Mountaineers were defeated in both matches, 6-2 by Ishpeming and 8-0 by the host Lady Patriots.

“After nearly two weeks of practice, it was nice to begin playing other teams today. Despite being a bit short-handed, the girls stepped up and played well,” second-year IM girls tennis coach Marcus Celello said.

“Many of them were playing in new spots, including Danika Juul and Bella Brown at No. 1 doubles, and I am proud of the way they fought all day. Aziza Burgoon and Natalia Brown did great things in their first singles matches today, both coming away with a win. This team has a lot of potential, and I’m excited to watch them realize that potential as the season progresses,” he said.

The Mountaineers return to action Thursday as they travel across Woodward Avenue to face Twin City rival Kingsford, as well as longtime rival Norway in two non-conference matchups, scheduled to be at the Kingsford High School Tennis Facility, starting at 3:30 p.m.

NOTE: The Kingsford Invitational that was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. today will now be on Friday, Aug. 27 at 9 a.m. at the Kingsford High School Tennis Facility. The Mountaineers are scheduled to compete in the event.
