‘Ladycats’ spikers compete in Phillips, Wis., tournament

PHILLIPS, Wis. — Florence’s volleyball team played in the Phillips Invitational over the weekend against some very good volleyball programs.

The Ladycats ended (2-4) on the day with wins against Rhinelander, 2-0 (25-13, 25-17) and Bruce, 2-0 (25-12, 25-11). Florence suffered losses against Phillips, 0-2 (23-25, 8-25), Lakeland High School, 1-2 (25-17, 17-25, 6-15), Ladysmith, 0-2 (14-25,14-25) and Prentice, 0-2 (9-25,15-25).

“It is always good to get to play larger schools and teams that you could see during state tournament time. We learned a lot and improved upon things I can not simulate in practice, like block coverage,” said Florence coach Teresa Chrisman.

“We battled close and then faltered. Too many ups and downs throughout the day. But, if we can learn and build upon these tournaments, the results will be great,” Chrisman added.

Chrisman stated that Morgan Tomczak had a solid day with 29 kills, 6 tip kills and 3 blocks. Sophomore Vicky Petersonnotched 6 kills and 1 block and freshman Kamdan Johnson had 8 kills and 2 tip kills.

Maddie Johnson led with 33 assists and Leah Young continues to be a leader in the back row and was a 100% server.

Florence hosts Goodman-Pembine in a varsity only Northern Lakes Conference match tonight at 6.
