Wykon netters tame Gwinn

IRON RIVER — West Iron County breezed past Gwinn 7-1 under windy conditions Thursday at the Nelson Field Tennis Courts.

“The wind was tough for all the players as the winds out of the south were gusting at 25 mph,” said West Iron coach Joe Serbentas. “I was happy with the experience as this was our first windy match and we needed to be tested.”

Kali Applin’s win at No. 1 singles over Lily Kerry was a three-hour match.

“Both players left it all on the court with an exciting finish,” Serbentas said.

The Wykons improved to 8-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Great Northern Conference. Their next match is at Norway’s Marion Park on Monday, a non-conference match versus the Lady Knights.
