FLORENCE, Wis. — With a trio of players scoring in double figures, led by 27 points from sophomore Isabella Millan, Florence defeated non-conference foe Wausaukee, 67-34, Tuesday night at Florence High School in what was the season-opening game for both teams.
Both teams seemed to have opening-night jitters, getting off to a slow start offensively. Florence came out in a man-to-man defense, while the Lady Rangers used a 1-2-2.
Millan and freshman Kamden Johnson, who scored 11 points in her high school basketball debut, began applying defensive pressure on the two Wausaukee up players, getting a handful of steals, but failing to convert all of the steals into points. At the 13:09 mark, Wausaukee held a one-point lead, 5-4.
“When we went in to a full-court, man-to-man for two possessions, I feel that really changed the tide of the game,” said Florence head coach Brad Perry. “We created some turnovers off of that and it got the girls confidence up.”
Less than two-and-a-half minutes later, the Ladycats held a five-point advantage after going on a 6-0 scoring run, pushing the tempo of the game and getting transition baskets. Florence extended their first half lead, taking an 18-point advantage into the intermission.
“Bella (Millan) realized that they (Wausaukee) weren’t getting back on defense, so she pushed the tempo and created some plays and points off of it,” Perry added.
As the second half began, Florence committed turnovers on their first two possessions, that Rangers junior Rachel Schlies turned into two break-away layups.
However, as the second half wore on, Florence extended their large lead with great ball movement and taking good shots in their half-court offense, which essentially put the game away. Sophomore Victoria Peterson chipped in 12 points for Florence (1-0) in the contest.
“We shot well tonight, especially to start the season. Overall, other than our free throw shooting, I am happy and excited for getting a win in the first game of the season,” Perry added. “We’ll also have to cut down our turnovers, because we know Niagara will put pressure on the ball defensively and we have to be ready for that.”
The Ladycats remain home as they will host non-conference rival Niagara on Thursday night.
The Rangers were scheduled to host non-conference foe Goodman-Pembine on the same night, however that game has been postponed.
In the JV contest, freshman Abby Novak poured in a game high 19 points, as Florence defeated the Rangers, 29-23.
