Swimming season underway for Flivvers

KINGSFORD — The Kingsford swimming team, comprised of 22 Flivvers swimmers, four from Iron Mountain and three from Norway, began its season over the past two weeks.

The first meet was the Westwood Relays, held on Dec. 7 at the YMCA of Marquette County. The second was a home dual meet against Marquette on Thursday at the Northern Lights YMCA.

In the Westwood Relays, the Flivvers were led by their boys open 200 freestyle team of junior Angelo Hurtubise, junior James Cain, senior Evan Tregillis and junior Michael Mulligan, who took first in 2 minutes, 4.91 seconds.

Kingsford also captured eight runner-up finishes, two thirds and a fourth in the meet, which also included the Patriots, Marquette and Ishpeming-Negaunee.

The Kingsford squad is made up of 29 swimmers, including 13 letterwinners this season, according to Coach Jim Lindstrom.

“Many of our first-year swimmers had the opportunity to get into competition for the first time … ,” Lindstrom said. “This (was) a good meet for them to try to get their feet wet with so many races that take four swimmers in each race. It gives them an opportunity that they may not get in a regular meet.”

In the meet against Marquette, the Kingsford girls fell 99-70.

“The girls had a really good meet, led by Adelaide McRoberts and the Scott sisters — seniors Samantha and Sydney — along with little sister Sierra. The four won the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay while Adelaide won the 200 free and 100 breaststroke in team record setting fashion.

“Samantha won the 100 backstroke and was second in the 200 IM. Sydney and Sierra added thirds in the 100 fly and 50 free, respectively,” Lindstrom added. “All four qualified for the U.P. Finals in two events, each swimming their first points meet of the year. Anna Lundholm also had a great swim coming in second in the 500 free, easily qualifying for finals in only the second time she swam it. We had a number of first-year swimmers that also had a good showing in their first high school meet, along with some veterans that had some good performances for early in the year.”

The Marquette boys defeated an outnumbered Kingsford squad 120-45.

“Marquette has 30 boys on their team while we only have 11, and half of them are in their first year and still learning ” Lindstrom said. “Freshman Joey Lundholm had a great first meet, finishing second in the 200 IM and winning the 100 fly by nearly six seconds. Zane Cahee and Kaden Matuszeski both dropped time while finishing third and second, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
