Flivvers impress at Splash meet
HOUGHTON — The Kingsford girls varsity swimming team won nine of 14 events at the Gremlin Splash in Houghton Jan. 8.
Sydney Scott and Adelaide McRoberts captured two individual events and contributed to two victorious relay teams in the five-team, non-scoring medal meet. Scott topped the field in the 100-meter individual medley and the 50 butterfly, while McRoberts won the 200 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke.
Scott and McRoberts were also part of the victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Samantha Scott and Sierra Scott were the other two members of those winning relay quartets.
Other individual girls winners included Samantha Scott in the 200 backstroke and Maggie Menghini in the 200 freestyle.
Also scoring a relay victory were Petra Grubb, Gabby Leiker, Mackenzie Gilroy and Anna Lundholm in the 200 freestyle relay.
The mixed 500 freestyle relay squad of Menghini, Anna Lundholm, Tommy Lundholm and Joey Lundholm was also triumphant.
Kaden Matuszewski was Kingsford’s lone boys winner, taking the 50 breaststroke.
“Our boys team was down three, with two of them at the last minute, and that really messed up what we had set up,” Kingsford coach Jim Lindstrom said. “I can’t say enough about the boys, they really do everything (they) can without complaining.”
Other teams competing in the event were Ishpeming/Negaunee, Gladstone, Manistique and host Houghton. Medals were awarded for first-, second- and third-place finishes.
