Boys hoops: Jets blow out Wolves

CARNEY — Connor Florenski led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as the North Central boys varsity basketball team routed Carney-Nadeau 78-36 in a Skyline Central Conference matchup Tuesday night at Carney-Nadeau High School.

The Jets (10-1) had seven players score nine points or more, with Luke Gorzinski (13) and Bryson Mercier (12) hitting double figures.

“Our ball movement and balanced scoring was great to see,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “It was really great to see the unselfishness of our entire squad.”

The UPSSA No. 3 Jets exploded for 26 points in the opening quarter to take an 18-point lead and were never threatened afterward.

“We played fairly well tonight,” Malone added. “We worked super hard and rebounded the ball well.”

Bobcats dispatch Lena 75-46

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence boys basketball team had little trouble with visiting Lena on Tuesday night, scoring a 75-46 non-conference home victory.

Evan Johnson led the way for the Bobcats (12-4) with 18 points, followed by Patrick Millan with 17 and William Kelley with 16.

Lena’s Max Beyer scored 22 points in defeat.

Florence coach Bryan Bomberg was especially pleased about his team’s rebounding numbers.

“First thing I told the guys after the game, ‘I love the 43 boards!’ he said. “It’s an area we focus on, and in the second half we did a much better job defensively on Max Beyer. Just proud of the effort by everyone.”

Mountaineers bury Wykons

IRON MOUNTAIN — Oskar Kangas scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter to help Iron Mountain take a 30-4 lead en route to a 73-21 West Pac Conference victory over West Iron on Tuesday night.

Kangas had plenty of help along the way. Reece Kangas buried four 3s in the second quarter and finished with 15 points, while Joey Colavecchi chipped in with 10 for the Mountaineers (7-3).

“Kids played good, got off to a great start,” Iron Mountain coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson said.

Peyton Hill topped the Wykons (1-11) with 12.

Nordics fall to Rockets 76-32

FELCH — Rapid River began to heat up in the latter stages of the first quarter and rode that momentum to a 76-32 victory over host North Dickinson in a Skyline Central Conference contest on Tuesday night.

The Rockets held a 16-7 lead after the opening quarter and opened their advantage to 37-15 at the break. Rapid River, which sank 12 3-pointers in the game, scored 21 more in the third quarter and added 18 in the fourth.

“They started hitting shots late in the first quarter and it didn’t stop,” ND coach Chris Mattson said. “We need to do a better job of closing out, but they just shot the lights out.”

Mattson said his team rebounded better than it had been and that some of his players are “starting to come out of their shell.”

Antonio Inglese led the way for the Nordics (1-11) with 17 points.
