Boys hoops: Norway pulls away from Wolves

CARNEY — This week, the Norway Knights entered the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association poll at No. 5 in Division 4.

But on Tuesday night against Carney-Nadeau, the Knights weren’t playing like a ranked team in the first half.

Down one at the break, the Knights improved their play and doubled up the Wolves over the final 16 minutes in their 57-42 Skyline Central Conference boys varsity basketball victory.

Michael Peterson scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the final two quarters to lead the way. In the third quarter when the Knights (10-4) turned the momentum, Alex Ortman hit two 3-pointers and Nolan Amundson added another as Norway took a 40-34 lead.

Junior Tyler Neuens put the finishing touches on the win with seven points in the fourth quarter.

“Our second half was much better,” Norway coach Jeff Gallino said. “Our help defense needs to improve. Tyler Neuens came in and gave us a much-needed boost in the second half.”

The Wolves (4-8) were led by Jerry Lee LaFord’s 19 points.

Flivvers beat up on Wykons 67-21

IRON RIVER — Ben Trevillian scored 17 points and Brody Kopp added 11 as Kingsford overwhelmed West Iron County 67-21 in a non-conference boys varsity basketball game Tuesday night at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

The UPSSA Division 1-3 third-ranked Flivvers (9-4) took immediate control of the game, grabbing a 25-5 lead after the first quarter. Kingsford then held the Wykons (1-13) to one point in the second quarter and led by 30 at halftime.

Michael Meneguzzo added nine points, Cole Myllya scored seven and Nic Nora chipped in with six for Kingsford.

Matthew Dutcher led West Iron with 15 points.

Bluejays edge Bobcats

THREE LAKES, Wis. — Three Lakes senior center Sam Eppler sparked his team to a 10-point lead at halftime and finished with 17 points as the Bluejays edged Florence 63-62 on Tuesday in a Northern Lakes Conference boys varsity basketball game in Three Lakes.

“After being down 10 at the break, I thought we adjusted a couple things defensively that really helped us lock down the inside game,” Florence coach Bryan Bomberg said. “Three Lakes has a nice inside player in Sam Eppler who crushed us in the first half.”

The Bobcats (13-5) fought back in the second half, but couldn’t overcome their deficit and wound up with a split in the regular-season series with Three Lakes.

“I really thought in the second half we got good looks in our offense,” Bomberg said. “We missed way too many easy shots at the rim that eventually cost us a ball game. We have some good film to go back and take a look at to see where we can and will get better.”

William Kelley topped Florence with 21 points, hitting four triples in the game. Evan Johnson added 15 with three 3-pointers.

Ashton Maney recorded 16 points and Cole Melton chipped in with 15 for the Bluejays, who after dropping their first three games of the season have now won seven in a row.

Badgers’ offense goes stone cold

NIAGARA — The Niagara Badgers mustered just 12 points in each half and dropped their M&O Conference boys varsity basketball game against visiting Crivitz 59-24 on Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (13-6) took a 28-12 lead after the first half and then outscored Niagara (6-12) 31-12 in the second half.

Junior Sean Christiansen led Crivitz with 21 points. Tommy Martin paced the Badgers with 10.
