IRON MOUNTAIN — The tri-meet between the host Kingsford varsity swim teams and visiting Gladstone and Houghton at the Northern Lights YMCA on Thursday took on added significance, as Flivver swimmers and fans honored the seniors on the local team.

Coach Jim Lindstrom said seniors MacKenzie Gilroy, Samantha Scott, Sydney Scott, Maggie Menghini, Anna Lundholm, Evan Tregillis and Gabrielle Leiker were honored by their teammates, with Adelaide McRoberts serving as the master of ceremonies.

“It was the last home meet for them,” Lindstrom said.

Kingsford then went on to celebrate a victory in the girls division, with the Flivvers tallying 133 points. Houghton was next with 109 points, with Gladstone ending the event with 56 points.

Kingsford swimmers posting wins in the girls division included Adelaide McRoberts (100 fly), Samantha Scott (100 backstroke), Sydney Scott (200 individual medley), Anna Lundholm (100 freestyle) and Maggie Menghini (500 freestyle). Samantha Scott, Sydney Scott, Sierra Scott and Adelaide McRoberts also teamed up to win all three relay events for the Flivvers.

“The whole girls team really swam well tonight with MacKenzie Gilroy and Gabrielle Leiker both having U.P. qualifying swims,” Lindstrom added.

Unfortunately in the boys division, Kingsford was unable to post another team win. Houghton topped the trio with 144 points, while the Flivvers took second with 93 points. Gladstone finished a distant third with 38 points.

Individual winners for Kingsford in the boys division included Joey Lundholm (200 and 500 freestyle, Kaden Matuszewski (100 breaststroke) and Zane Cahee (200 IM).

“The boys did a great job but with so many new ones they just can’t cover all of the lanes,” Lindstrom said.

“For much of the team this was the last regular season meet,” the coach added. “The ones that did not make qualifying time for UP finals they will get one last chance at the Marquette JV meet on Feb. 11”
