Hoops wrap: Badgers hang with Bobcats
NIAGARA, Wis. — In their opening game of the 2021-22 season, the Niagara Badgers struggled mightily against rival Florence, losing by 49 points in Florence.
In their penultimate game of the regular season, the Badgers put up a tougher battle before falling 59-53 in the non-conference boys varsity basketball game Monday in Niagara.
“We had much improvement tonight,” Niagara coach Terry Youren said. “Peaking at the right time. Florence has a very nice team.”
The Badgers (7-15) were led by Logan Weber, who scored 14 and Tommy Martin added 11.
The Bobcats (16-5) had multiple double-digit scorers, as has been their norm for most of the season. Evan Johnson led the way with 12, Dominic DeMuri and Logan Schuls recorded 11 each. William Kelley and Patrick Milan supported with 10 each.
Trojans bury Wolves 60-42
CRYSTAL FALLS — The Forest Park Trojans ran away from Skyline Central Conference foe Carney-Nadeau in the second quarter Monday night in their 60-42 boys varsity basketball tussle at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
The Trojans (7-10) outscored the Wolves (4-12) 31-10 in the second frame to grab a 38-17 advantage at halftime.
Kevin Giuliani topped Forest Park with 16 points and Gaven Rintala recored 12, all on 3-point shots.
Nordics start slow in loss
RAPID RIVER — The North Dickinson boys varsity basketball team scored just two points in the opening quarter and fell behind by 15 points en route to a 66-26 Skyline Central Conference loss on Monday night at Rapid River.
The Nordics (2-15) basically played even with Rapid River (11-5) during the second and third quarters before the Rockets finished strong with 27 points in the fourth.
Colin LaFave led the Nordics (2-15) with 10 points. The junior sank three of his team’s four 3-point shots.
Mountaineers easily top WIC
IRON RIVER — The Iron Mountain Mountaineers took a quick lead over host West Iron County on Monday night and went on to a 66-19 triumph over the Wykons in a West Pac Conference boys varsity basketball game at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
Joey Colavecchi tallied 10 points in the opening quarter to spark Iron Mountain (13-4) to a 28-6 lead after one period and the Mountaineers never looked back in posting their seventh win in eight games.
