IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team had plenty to celebrate Saturday after hosting the Mid-Peninsula Conference championships.

At the end of the day, the host Mountaineers had made sure the conference trophy wouldn’t be leaving, topping the field of eight teams with 183.5 points. Gladstone was the invitational’s runner-up with 127 points, while Bark River-Harris was third in the team standings with 126 points.

The team’s success was due to some great individual performances, with seven Iron Mountain wrestlers winning their respective weight classes, including Shayna Hruska (103), Shawn McGuire (119), Isaac Manier (140), Evan Haferkorn (145), Parker Stroud (152), Mason Kivi (160) and Fulton Stroud (171).

“Senior Isaac Manier, who is 31-5, won his first-ever tournament,” said Cory McLaren, Mountaineer head coach. “Isaac’s having a great year and all his hard work is showing up on the mat.”

It was also a big day for McGuire, who recorded his 100th career victory at the varsity level in his first match. He later got a bit of revenge when he beat Gladstone’s Drew Hanson in the final round to win the 119-pound division.

“Drew had beaten him at the U.P. finals,” McLaren said.

Also, another pair Mountaineers — Tyler Winch (125) and Daniel Manier (130) — battled their way to a pair of second-place medals at the conference event.

“(It) was another great day for us as a team and individually,” McLaren added. “With the postseason starting next week, it seems like we are peaking at the right time.”

Iron Mountain will travel for a team district competition in Gwinn on Thursday, with wrestling starting at 6 p.m. Eastern time and then hit the road again for individual districts in Westwood on Saturday.

Other teams competing at the conference invitational included Manistique (fourth, 106 points), Negaunee (fifth, 100.5 points), Westwood (sixth, 66 points), Ishpeming (seventh, 51 points) and Gwinn (eighth, 16 points).
