Back on track: Bobcats sweep delayed twinbill
FLORENCE — It might have taken nearly two weeks, but the Florence boys baseball team finally completed a doubleheader sweep of Wabeno/Laona at home on Tuesday.
The Bobcats were originally slated to play at Laona on May 12 by was suspended due to weather. So, according to the WIAA, the two rivals were able to play two 5-inning games in a doubleheader format.
“We played 3 of the first 5 innings on May 12 and were up 5-0,” said Florence head coach Kris Johnson. “The game was suspended due to rain and we resumed play (in the top of the 4th inning) in Game 1 on Tuesday in Florence.”
But the Rebels didn’t go quietly, scoring twice in the 4th and putting up 4 more runs in the 5th. But that wasn’t enough to stop Florence from finally winning 11-6 behind a complete game by Bobcat pitcher Cole Sweig who gave up 5 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 and walking 3 batters.
Evan Johnson, who had 2 of the Bobcats’ 6 stolen bases in the game, led Florence at the plate with a 3 for 3 performance that included scoring 4 runs and driving in 1. Sweig (2-2, 2 RBIs) helped his own cause, with the Bobcats also getting multiple hits from Trent McLain (2-3, 3 Rs, 2 RBIs) as Florence tallied 11 base knocks in the win.
Game 2 was all Florence, with the Bobcats walking off the field with a 7-0 win. Not only did the victory give Florence a sweep of the elongated twinbill, but also a share of the Northern Lakes Conference title.
“We needed to win both to be co-conference champs,” Coach Johnson said.
The Bobcats put 2 on the board in the opening inning and followed than up with 5 runs in the decisive 2nd frame.
That was more than enough for McLain, who took the mound for Florence and allowed just 2 Rebel hits over 5 innings. He also struck out 5 while not allowing a walk.
The Bobcats had only a little more luck at the plate than the Rebels, managing only 3 hits in the Game 2 win. But Florence was take advantage of 5 walks and an error that led to an unearned run.
Tyler Novak (1-2) drove in 2 runs for the Bobcats, with William Kelley (0-2), Joey Holmstrom (1-2, R) and Sweig (0-1) tallying an RBI.
