IM, Wykons capture D2 victories
IRON RIVER — On a day that began with weather worries but turned into a pleasant early evening at Nelson Field in Iron River, the Iron Mountain boys and the West Iron County girls varsity track and field teams left with MHSAA Division 2 Regional 43 team trophies in tow.
The Mountaineers boys won nine of the 17 events to easily outpoint runner-up L’Anse 69-34. West Iron County placed third with 31, followed by Painesdale-Jeffers (24), Ironwood (21) and Hancock (5).
In the girls competition, the Wykons captured eight firsts en route to scoring 74 points, far ahead of runner-up Ironwood’s 37. The Mountaineers fell into third with 31, followed by Hancock (24), L’Anse (16) and Painesdale-Jeffers (2).
Top four finishers in all events qualified for the U.P. Finals, which will be held at Kingsford High School on Saturday, June 4.
Iron Mountain’s top boys individual performer was senior sprinter Max Jayne, who was victorious in the 100 (11.99) and the 200 (24.39). Fellow senior Luke Ruble won the 3,200 (11:11.49) and ran the anchor leg of the Mountaineers’ winning 3,200 relay (9:21.31).
Iron Mountain’s relay teams of Jayne, Joey Colavecchi, Kurt Adiao Ryan and Matthew Colavecchi also left with wins in the 400 and 800 relays.
West Iron County senior Landon Sundelius was dominant in both the 110 hurdles (17.34) and the 300 hurdles (41.59). The son of U.S. Olympic gold medalist Nick Baumgartner also ran the anchor leg in the victorious 1,600 relay with Bradly Jochem, Nick Mattson and Kyle Carlson.
Wykon sophomore sprinter Danica Shamion kept her undefeated sprint season going with victories in the 100 (13.22), the 200 (27.01) and the 400 (1:01.23). Classmate Sienna Stine picked up wins in both the 100 hurdles (19.79) and the 300 hurdles (56.49), while West Iron junior thrower Katarina Hemeleski topped the field in both the shot put (29-05) and the discus (93-0).
Junior Chloe Maycroft was Iron Mountain’s top individual performer, winning the high jump (4-8) and the long jump (12-11). Maycroft also helped her team with the 400 relay (56.46) and the 800 relay (1:58.92), teaming with Bella Pickett, Emma Ellis and Anja Kleiman each time.
“There are surprises every track meet and thankfully we had quite a few positive surprises at regionals,” IM coach Karen Ellis said.
Ellis mentioned the freshman Lundholm finishing first in the pole vault, Michael Dove taking second in the 300 hurdles as a freshman, Jayne capturing both the 100 and the 200 and Maycroft’s victories in the high jump and the long jump as examples.
“Both the girls and boys teams did a fantastic job in all their events today and I couldn’t be happier with the results,” Coach Ellis said.
