Prep Tennis: Esky captures Kingsford Invite

KINGSFORD — Some of the top boys tennis teams in the U.P. met at the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday, with Escanaba outdueling Negaunee for the championship.

The Eskymos and the Miners battled for all eight flight titles with Escanaba winning seven of them to compile 46 points. The Miners won at No. 3 singles, and with their seven runner-up finishes, totaled 34 points.

The three local teams in the competition came in next. Iron Mountain wound up with 19 points, followed by Kingsford with 16 and West Iron County with 12. Menominee did not score in the event.

The Mountaineers won all four singles third-place matches with David Juul at No. 1, Brenden LaPoint at No. 2, Kaden Sheldon at No. 3 and Kurt Adiao Ryan at No. 4.

Iron Mountain also finished third in the No. 3 doubles flight behind Carter Kassin and Dylan Lindgren.

The Flivvers were led by their No. 1 doubles and No. 4 doubles teams, which both took third. Isaac Nash and Ben Trevillian were victorious in the third-place match at the top doubles flight, while Hunter Hulkonen and Chris Sweig equaled that with a third-place finish at No. 4 doubles.

West Iron County was led by its No. 2 doubles team of Logan McCord-Jackson Strom, which defeated Iron Mountain for third place. The Wykons finished fourth at No. 1 singles (Matthew Dutcher) and No. 1 doubles (Colton Holm-Sam Holroyd).
